Dev. Journal: squeek. (2012-06-26)

As KubeDawg suggested, since we probably won't get Steamworks support, including our own auto-updater would be nice. I've been looking into doing just that over the past few days and might have found something that could work. Here is a quick test of a dummy update:

This is using wyUpdate, a free, open-source auto-updater. However, the program used to create the actual updates (the development team side of things) is not free. Each license is $86, which we might need only 1 of, but I'm not sure yet.

For now, I'll continue looking to see if there are other options, but I just wanted to share that it definitely seems possible.

Why not put in a small donation box and have people throw some towards it. I know FF was trying to keep a no donations/paying people kinda deal but you know if people want to donate and help, why the hell not. I know I'd throw some in if I had the available funds.

Just wanted to extend my warmest thanks to the dev team for looking into this.

Going with Neon, I also recommend setting up some sort of a donation box, possibly through PayPal -- I'm sure many here would be willing to contribute to a cause such as this. I know I would.

Thank you!

Might end up doing this, but I want to make sure it's the best option we've got first. This was just the first auto-updater I found that looked like it'd work for our purposes.

heres some options squeek...
1. http://sparkle.andymatuschak.org/
2. http://winsparkle.org/

there is 2 more choices those are both completely free. however it seems making your own if possible is the best solution.

after reading wybuild it seems kinda expensive as you not only have to pay 85 dollars but also for major updates as well. for a mod it just doesn't add up, for a product it might be perfect.

Don't we use NSIS for our installers currently? It should be possible to create a script that does about the same thing.

As far as I could tell, sparkle will only check for updates, and if it finds one, it will download your software's installer and run it. That means it's just as much/more work for us to release updates (still have to create patch installers) and really not all that different for the user.

Wow, nice! Also though, it might be a good idea to make a list of features you want the auto-updater to have such as the ability to cancel an update. I know there have been times where I have wanted to install an older version of FF separate from my main FF so I could play some old demo files that might not be available to view in the current version of FF.

That looks like it would do wonders though and if it's just a 1 time license fee of $85, if it does the job you want, I'd say go for it.

If you want to view old demos, just install an older version of FF. It's not that hard.

both of those look like you could addon to the code to accommodate whatever features you need. however you have to have time and a dedicated coder for that.

so it looks like we have a winner unless we decide to go down the path of basically modifying/making your own.

the wyupdater seems to do everything one could need or want, you can even roll back updates. (features) However for me anyways the 85 dollar price tag is still a concern. Is it really worth 85 dollars to a mod? (plus having to pay for major updates down the road... even if they are discounted.) Though it does all the things you need it to do, and more. So if it means less work and faster updates it could easily pay for itself in keeping the player count up and the mod updated.

Well if the devs would prefer to focus their coding/programming attention on other things and save time (though not money) by purchasing an auto-updater that does the job, to them and the community it might be worth the $85 price tag rather than the time needed to invest in coding an FF auto-updater.

Yep, this would be the most desired outcome, I'm pretty sure.
