I'm addicted to this game. I had to irrigate some land for farming. Rather time consuming, but pretty neat when you get everything working. It's especially fun when you use your head and build a reservoir which can be refilled from a pocket of water which allows you to control more carefully how much water floods into your farm room. Plus, adding drains is smart because you can reuse the water when it drops below. (;
I agree with the depth of this game. There are multiple ways to approach different situations, and that makes it fun. I'm actually really surprised I find an ascii game addicting. In fact, I purposely choose the ascii version over the graphical updates — it feels more authentic. |

Dwarf Fortress
Anyone play?
I've checked it out and played it for about an hour... but I honestly have no idea as to what I'm doing. I've read tutorials, guides, etc. etc. and I honestly can't make heads or tails of it.

There's already a thread on it. I played for a week. It was pretty addicting. You can download a graphical pack for it, if the ascii proves intimidating or confusing.

I got into it a few months ago, but now I don't have time.
It's surprisingly esay to set up a stable, secure, prosperous, boring fort if you know what to do, so you end up having to take on insane projects or sabotaging yourself to have some "fun". |

The dig location should be more brown than yellow. To mine, you should hit the D key to open Designations then D once more for the mine tool. Then you hit enter and move around using the arrow keys, hitting enter once more to create the dig location between the initial spot you hit enter and the spot you last hit enter. If this doesn't do anything, it's because you can't dig on the type of ground you're on. I usually start by having my Dwarves build downward staircases (D -> J) then hit > (shift-.) to go underground and build upwards staircases on the same squares as the downward staircases, which should be above them when you go back up (<), then I mine out a fortress underground.

Jesus Christ, I looked all over for how the Hell to go up and down levels and I couldn't find it for the life of me.
Welp, I just fucked up for like the fifth time and I'm going to start over. The game is fun but the controls are goddamned frustrating.

Well now I just can't figure out how the hell to go underground. I mean, I can *SEE* it (thanks Bridget), but I can't figure out how to get my Dwarves down there. I've build a 1 tile Down Stairs, but it doesn't show up on the next level down. x_x

You either find a rock/dirt wall and tunnel straight into it, or you dig a stair down.
Digging a down stairway is the first step; then you have to go directly down a level and dig the stairs going up. This will allow you to tunnel underground. http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/...-no-srsly-wtf/ |

Thanks a fuckton Carl. That last link actually broke shit down well enough for me. So many tutorials and stuff were like "Okay, so you dig down..." Dig down how, goddammit?
I got better, dug down some... ran into a wet wall. Fucked up my whole base plan. I got pissed after that and quit haha.

Well, I'm on my like sixth fort and things are finally going pretty good, but I'm running out of booze and food!
I have a still and I have farms going. I had the one farmer plant Plump Helmets for all four seasons, and yet my food stockpile is just going downhill.

Draft more than one brewer so you can always have the still going. And make sure to keep the barrels coming; even though they are reusable, you will run out.
Plump helmets are primarily for booze production. A kitchen will multiply the quality of your food when it's cooked, especially when your cook gets more skilled. If you have a pond nearby, assign a fisherdwarf. He will spend almost all his time fishing, and pretty soon you'll be buried in turtle meat. If there are animals about, you can try hunting, but hunters get killed very easily. If all else fails you can trade for food and booze by making crafts. If you get a breeding pair of animals, you'll soon have a steady supply of meat (cats breed quickly, btw). |

I've managed to survive thus far via trading and gathering plants. A fisherdwarf sounds like a good idea indeed.
I have a kitchen and still built, but no dwarves dedicated to those professions at the moment as I am currently working on building a very large dining hall and meeting hall. I'm getting a ton of ore that's useless to me (for practical purposes), i.e. Alunite and Magnetite. It can't be used for floors/walls/etc... so what the hell is it good for? I have like 300 Alunite and 50 Magnetite in my massive stores. Every time my dwarves strike Alunite, I die a little inside.

I started playing again. Picked up a fortress I had just barely started and got to digging. There was a bottomless pit nearby, so I dug into it, thinking it would be a handy way to dispose of trash. As soon as I breached the wall, there was a giant cave spider. Right on the other side. It went insane running aound killing everything. I drafted everyone who had a weapon, but they couldn't touch it.

I thought I had my seventh or so Fortress running smoothly. Everything was going really nice.
Then the Sieges came. I'm on my eighth fortress now. As an aside, floodgates + levers make excellent castle gates. I'll post pics of my current fort later. I like that I can play this game essentially in the background of whatever else I'm doing. Okay you little dude, dig out this section and the rest of you haul stone to the stockpile. I'm gonna go watch anime and I'll be back in 15 minutes to check on you. I seem to have a problem getting marksdwarves to get going for some reason though. I made bows, I made arrows (well, bolts?), I assigned 'em to Marksdwarf and I had an archery range set up for them. Yet they don't really do anything aside from Wrestling. Aaaaggh.

My water source has no carp. I've picked a clam area outside of their biome.
The only threat is kobold thieves (yawn) and goblin raids. I'm gonna wait for my fortress to be finished before I post pics. Well, not so much the underground of it - that will take days of my time to build. I'm talking about the mighty keep that I have built above ground. :3
