I find it odd that the doctor's first inclination was brain surgery instead of gastric bypass....

The article said they tried other things but they were unsuccessfull. It didn't go into detail, but perhaps they knew it wouldn't work. It has little effect on some people because the stomache can stretch back out to its original size.
