Guitar players, HELP!

Edit - OK people... Yes I am new to guitars. Get over it. Yes I am looking for a music store near me, don't bother posting "take it somewhere", I am trying to find a place. Give advice or don't post. Simple as that.

Ok so i'm trying to learn how to play guitar.. one of my strings broke so I restrung it, probably not the best as it was my first time ever doing so. Anyway, I put all the strings on and the B (second from bottom) string rings like a mother fucker. Ring... buzz.. whatever you want to call it. Its so annoying it made me stop playing for a little over a month. I noticed if I hold down any fret it does not make that noise. One of my friends suggested raising the string, it seems it is as high as it will go and still makes the buzzing noise.

So to sum it up- when I play the b string open it rings/buzzes like a mother fucker. When I hold any frets down its normal. What can I do to fix this? All i can tell you is that it's electric. It was given to me and is unmarked so there is no "brand name". Any suggestions are appreciated.

Also i didnt know where else to put this, i figured I cant go wrong with the chat section.

Edit: Also i just found out... where the string goes into the slot before the first fret (whatever that thing is called).. if I take it out of the slot and just lay it on top the buzzing stops.

It's probably a cheap guitar probably not worth the money getting fixed. The string is most likely hitting a fret, or there is a problem with the nut.

& if you're serious about learning the guitar - buy yourself a decent guitar($300-500 range). Nothing worse than learning on some POS offbrand guitar with problems up the ass

Even cheap guitars are worth fixing sometimes. I had to have the neck straightened/adjusted out on mine, it did the same thing way back when before I bought a good one and only cost me $40 I think. If you make buddies with guys who run or work at guitar shops, they will almost always look at it for free and tell you how much they'll charge to fix it.

AMEN! I have an Ibanez Soundgear that I bought off a girl that was moving for $25, after adjusting the bridge and a new nut, she sings!

Cheap instruments are no substitute for a quality axe, but newbs on starter gear vs newbs on pro gear all sound the same.

you might need to raise the action on the guitar, seems the strings are too low and hitting the last fret
raising the action will throw the guitar way out of tune, id recommed taking the guitar to a local guitar shop and asking that they set it up.
I have a cheap les paul copy called an el degas my dad got in the 70s for 80 bucks, it now has 200 dollar active emgs and sounds like a 1000 dollar gibson. DFA you dont know shit.

gotta love those active emgs - evil metal sound if you want them that way soo much gaaaaiin

I was going to suggest changing the action too.. look it up online (maybe) or try to get some advice or better still, go in to the shop see how much they'll do it for but see if they'd explain what they're doing and maybe then you can try it yourself - its not too hard, I did it without ever having played or owned a guitar.. did it for my mate on and ancient battered custom SG

Even if someone gives you expert advice, it's probable that you'll still mess it up. Not because you're worthless, but because you're trying to mess with something that you've got 0 experience with fixing.

Take it to a guitar tech, like everyone said, they'll almost all look at 'em for free, and give you a guess on the repair cost. If you find out what it is, then look for a guide online, if you're cheap and risky.

There are too many causes for someone to tell you for sure what's wrong without holding it, and you don't want to go around "fixing" 3 problems you don't have.

I had 0 experience before I built my computer, got that done without any problems. Had a small paper where i jot down some advice i was given and that's it. I don't see how it would be impossible for me to fix this with some advice too.

However I guess since it's hard for you to tell what the problem is i have no choice but to take it somewhere it seems.

When you put together a computer, you know exactly where you're starting from, and where you were going. You knew the parts, and how they went together. It was, essentially, putting together a puzzle.

With your guitar, you have no idea what's causing the problem. It's like taking your puzzle example, sawing off the edges, and painting over the picture.

Which is part of what I said earlier when I said: "There are too many causes for someone to tell you for sure what's wrong without holding it, and you don't want to go around "fixing" 3 problems you don't have."
But, hey, you're the one asking for advice and getting defensive about it. For no reason.

I said I think I would be able to do it, given that some solid advice is needed. Then I agreed with you saying that its hard for you people to tell whats wrong.

Having confidence doesn't mean I'm being defensive.

Given your past experience (you know, fucking it up restringing it), I think your confidence may be misplaced.

Warning to the whole group:

Knock off the bashing, bullshit and trolling. Either help him out, or STFU. You wanna fight, go start a thread in D&A.

Just give me the reason to drop the ban hammer.

Your problem is probably either the curvature of the neck or the height of the saddles. Either way, I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself if you're new. Of course, you have to learn sometime, but it's best to know the instrument a little better first.

Thanks for the tip. My cousin has been playing for ~6 years and he will be coming up to my place in a week or so. I will have him take a look at it.
Having a couple things I can toss at him for possibilities is always a plus.
