Getting rid of Dust?

My computer, four months since its birth, is a dust factory. I don't want to use compressed air, because I always get the cans that spew liquid or spray mist. So, does anyone have or know of an alternate method or possible product to get rid of this annoyance? My computers fans are beginning to annoy me. "Whhirr.... Whirrr.. Whhirr.. HALP."

Use a vacuum cleaner, I guess. Or disassemble your PC and clean it.

hiya, are you using the compressed air in short blasts? if you dont it causes the air to condensate and that how you end up shooting out mist or liquid.

Also make sure the can is always straight up or as close to it as possible.

Or just get a swifer duster. Or even a regular duster.

If you're not equalizing the grounds between the chassis and the vacuum...this is a super bad idea. Vacuums generate plenty of static to where you have a good run at damaging something.

As to the "moisture" from inert dusting gas...it's not harmful and it evaporates quickly. You should not, however, use it on an operating PC and you should allow a few minutes before you power it back up.

I just bring my pc into my backyard and use a leaf blower. Of course I stand like 5 feet back. That damn thing blows all the dust out.

That sounds like a fun way to do it. I take a benadryl(damn allergies) and a can of air and maybe something else, usually just the can of air though.

vacume cleaners aren't as bad as everyone says it is. I've done it to MANY computers, never had any issues.

It's the risk involved. It's sort of like running across the highway. Yeah, you might not get hit the first time, or the fifteenth... but that sixteenth time...

with a vacuum cleaner you just gotta tap something metal first while its running
that should reduce the risk
or just use the short plastic part of it

My vac can be hooked up in reverse by just removing the filter and plugging the hose in there and then using the little plastic nozzle to concentrate the are flow a little. Thats how I clean out not only my system but many other systems for many many years.

If the blowing can't get something then I turn it back the other way and use the plastic nozzle to get inside if needed. I always touch something metal first though.

a leaf blower from a distance could do the same job though, I just prefer the vac cause I can get into smaller areas.

A hair dryer might do the same thing as my vac in reverse and if you have the little plastic end that concentrates the air more it should work fine. Though you should turn it on the cold or cool setting. Don't get too close to the electronics and you should be fine.

And as the other said don't do it while its on. And do it out side that way the dust bunnies have somewhere to run when you evict them.

I agree with the general consensus about vacuums. The risk definitely there to fry your components from a static discharge. Even if you ground yourself first. If you have shoes on and are moving around on the carpet while you're vacuuming, you will create additional static and potentially discharge it onto sensitive components.

I generally go out in the driveway with a can of air. Like Innoc said. Even if you hold the can upside down and spray frozen liquid onto your computer, it will dissipate in a minute or 2.

If you are really accumulating that much dust in only a 4 month period, maybe a thorough cleaning of your office is in order?

This site has some general cleaning tips if you're interested.

Once a year or so I just disassemble the case, take out everything (mobo included) and give it a good cleaning/scrubbing. 24 hours or so to dry and voila.

I don't go this far as much because I lurve my computer too much. When I have a backup to play games online then it'll all be gravy baby.
