Asteroid xp14 very close to earth

I didn't notice a post about this, so I thought I'd bring it up.

Asteroid XP14 is going to pass very close to earth on july 3. It's distance is estimated at 1.1 lunar or 0.0025 AU. That would be 383,921 km. Probabilty of it hitting is slim, but I'm not going to ignore something that big, that close to earth.

It's supposed to be half a mile wide, dense rock. That would be 62,000 times stronger than the atom bomb drop on hiro if it somehow hit Earth.

Here is a website with the course, check it out for yourself.
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/db_shm?des=2004+XP14

Also check out the asteroid simulator for yourself if you don't believe the stats
http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffects/

Another thing I find interesting is the fact that starting today, June 19th, Government officials are going into underground bunkers until around july 25th. They say it's for continuity purposes. Meh, could just be coincidence.

This is probably God's belated Christmas present. It's gonna turn out like Half Life.

If the science dudes tell us it won't hit, its not going to hit. Its quite easy to determine its trajectory, compare it to where earth will be at the time both objects cross paths, and give doomsday estimates well ahead of time. Shit, they've got comets down to precisely when they'll pass and how far out, a flying chunk of rock isn't any harder. If you're really worried about an object passing that close, take some time to search astronomical info to see how many rocks pass us by on a regular basis. You'll realize the same thing that wiped out the dinosaurs will eventually do the same to us. That is, if we don't waste humanity on our own.

During the school year in astronomy we talked about this fellow astroid.

However, if you think 383,921 km is close to Earth, try 36,350 km. That's where some satellites orbit. It will be visible to naked eye. EST: 2029. But this is only for our life times. There's one predicted to come even closer in 2102.

Ok, in the vastness of space that is close. But let's think more about human distances here 383,000 kms is pretty far away. It's not like it's passing with 100, 500, 1,000, or even 10,000 miles of earth.

9942 Apophis (previously known by its provisional designation 2004 MN4) is a Near-Earth asteroid that caused a brief period of concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a relatively large probability that it would strike the Earth in 2029. However, additional observations provided improved predictions that eliminated the possibility of an impact on Earth or the Moon in 2029. An impact is still possible on April 13, 2036, keeping the asteroid at level 1 on the Torino impact hazard scale. As of June 2006, this corresponds to an impact probability of 1 in 38,000.

Although there have been a few false alarms, a number of asteroids are definitely known to be threats to the Earth

Haha, suckers. Canada Day is on the 1st.

But anyway, close or not is this something probably worth looking for/seeing on that day? I mean, we're not going to get anywhere near space travel any time soon. Seeing a giant rock fly by would help to make you feel small. Is this thing even bigger than the moon?

Don't you guys get it? This isn't an asteroid, its the mother ship... it will send down smaller ships and attack the largest cities first. After the President's wife is killed, him and a drunk guy fly jets and fire missles at the alien aircraft while Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum fly into space to plant the virus. This will disable the protective shields and Earth will live to see another day.

"We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive, today we celebrate our Independence Day!"

EDIT: BTW Ambex, I read that the possibility translates to 1 in 6250 that Apophis hits Earth. What's your source?
