Mouse Reaction Delay Problem Thing.

So I'm trying to play Half-Life 1 games on my computer, and bam! When I move my mouse, there's a delay before the onscreen cursor moves. This makes playing very hard. It also happens in Rome: Total War.

So like... what the hell?

Doesn't matter, as in it does it on my touchpad, and when I use a USB mouse.

It doesn't do it any other time though. And I doubt that I'm lagging on a HL1 game. And the mouse is the only thing with delay.

Naw. THe HL1 thing has been happening since I got the computer, and I just installed Rome: Total War.

I've tried it with 3 different ones. One is my touchpad on my laptop, the other two are logitech laser wireless mouses.

Unless you spend a shedload of money (and even then) wireless sucks for gaming.

There is a large amount of latency involved, although the touchpad should be fine.

i've never really had problem as such with my logitech mx900 mouse, it works just fine.

While Circ and Innoc both have good recommendations, there is another possiblity...

Wireless mice (unless top of the line) are notorious for lag/slight delay in response time.

I'd suggest you try a corded mouse. First as USB, but if there is still lag then get one of the USB->PS2 converters and run it as a PS2 mouse.

All of this is due to the way that the system interrupts on the bus occur. When "wireless", it needs to "wake up" first, and when gaming, the CPU and memory and bus are all "busy" due to the intense nature of gaming computations (movement/display/etc), so there is a delay before the mouse movement is recognized. And if you don't have a dedicated video card in the laptop, you are then using shared memory for the video card memory... which adds to the "busy" state.

The reason other things are probably fine is that they are not system resource hogs. Gaming is.

In general, if you have things running in the background (anti-virus, IM, stuff) turn them off. If you are running on battery, expect lag. Try running it only with A/C power when gaming. Turn off the power options settings on your laptop... normally you can set it differently based on whether you are running on battery or powered. When gaming, you don't want the hdd powering up and down.

Probably more, but those are off the top of my head...

I actually have mouse delay on HL2 since I'd gotten a new Logitech myself, its not wireless though. Funny thing is it only happens single player, HL2DM, CS:S, Dystopia, and even the SP mods I downloaded work fine. Seems to go away after a while though. I never thought to turn the mouse acceleration off, that may help it.
