what about adding an SoTF tag at the end of player names of teachers so that people can identifiy them?
something like +- ReApEr 18 -+ [SoTF] or {SoTF} (SoTF) |SoTF| /SoTF\ or something of the sort |

Yeah I think there should definitely be a tag...but I think that it should only be worn by people who have applied and joined.
Once we have the site up and what not I think things can get more structured as opposed to just a post.

More people, this is good. As for the tag it was added depending how your name was already tagged. If it was tagless, throw it on however you want. If it had a tag, you threw it on the opposite end of the name. I don't think it's important where it is but important in just having it. As for the site I think I got a suitable fix for those couple things and gonna try to get the Staff, Contact, and Help page up tomorrow. The staff page will, at the moment, hold a list of all current teachers and a box on the side will display a small amount of detail, probably just avatar and their experience, when the mouse rolls over the name. Full details won't be up till I get around to scripting the whole site (and yes I know for something small as displaying the teachers staff is a small one but I'm trying to not jump back and forth between development, gets sloppy.) On Sunday I'll be mainly working with my friend on another website as a freelance project but I'm gonna try to get a message board setup as well. All that will be left is mainly the script that will handle the scheduling of sessions.
When the site is near completion I'll probably start another thread titled 'SoTF Phase #2' or something similar, but for now what would you guys think on these couple things: 1. Duration of sessions: How long do you think a session should be? I was figuring at least an hour, can be more if agreed upon by both teacher-student. 2. Reserving server: For each session the server will be reserved. This isn't mandatory since there are plenty of empties and say a couple students times for learning could happen to fall on the same date/time. So maybe first student who gets that slot has priority? 3. Teacher Requests: Teachers can requests certain resources/help from other teachers. For example, if Teacher A needs to teach his student a certain skill/strategy and feels it would be easier to demonstrate with more help, he/she can request another Teacher for that session. This can also apply for say a certain map that was created specifically for what was being taught. I had a few other things listed but I can't think of them off the top of my head. Also I went to GameServer's website and the prices are pretty cheap for just renting a game server, $20 for a public 12-slot or $20 for a private-16 slot. This is affordable for me since I regularly blow at least $40 a month just on horse racing (unless Saratoga is open or a big race is running (Derby, nudge nudge)) and rather put the money to something useful since I usually end up losing it anyway Anyone have any experience with this service? Any good? I'm not looking for a server that's gonna host league matches, this is mainly for SoTF purposes and if public just run skill maps mainly (maybe a few sniping-only map) as well. |

that sounds good cow, but time of classes should definately be decided between the teacher and the students involved
but anything below at least 30 minutes will be too short for beginners |

Soon after I was made an admin on the old /On.Off servers and yadadadada. SiSCoS then moved away and EatSh!t took over and made me the defensive captain. After about a year of that EatSh!t had some issue or another and left with me in charge. He came back after awhile and eventually we disbanded with a lack of interest in the game. We had also developed a reputating for being assholes... no idea why lol |

cow...that's exactly how I have / had it in my head.
We need some sort of schedule so that the student can look at the teachers available and submit his request to him / her / them. Then between us (teachers) we can decide who can / wants to help them and then reply. Then things can be hashed out tween the student and teacher. I would like to see something that allows for a student to email multiple teachers and allow for the teachers to all see who the email was sent to. If we can get a small private forum or message board then we can hash out who is going to take on the student in private and then that person can contact them. I would say we would really only need one board or one forum section...post would just need to be the name of the applicant. Maybe if when they submit a request it could automatically start up a post or something somewhere with the name they submitted it by and then all teachers who were requested would get contacted via IM or email or whatever. Each teacher could post on weather they are taking him on...kind of a first come first server thing. If me, you, and circ all get the email and I post saying I will accept him / her then you two would know not to bother and I would contact him. But if I post saying I can't accept him / her then one of you two would then know that I'm not available and could take them on. Of course that's getting a little complicated, so maybe just see who it was sent to and then one of us could put up the thread with their name saying either I will take them or someone else needs to... We can get a free forum board for really cheap and I can set it up...it wouldn't be anything special, but would be a nice feature to help keep things flowing smoothly. Especially once we start branching out past FF then I really think this is going to be something we need. Let me know if you think it's a good idea and I will set one up this weekend. I also think that if we have a form for submission, then the teacher's contact info should not be public. This way we can ensure that everything is done the same way every time and nothing falls apart. Once a student has been accepted by a teacher then they should / could send their contact information to the student and work things out via whatever means is best for them both. Also I finally got most of the things I needed to done so I will begin working on my part tonight...shouldn't take me too long to get a couple of mock up banners. I'll try to hit you up sometime this weekend so we can hash out more things too man. long post sry.

Yes a schedule system would be best. I like the idea of filling time slots.
I personally like to take on two students (training them one at a time of course) and do several 1 hour+ sessions a week and get them set on most of the fundamentals of the classes they want to learn within several weeks. I would offer, say, 8 to 9 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and potentially continue teaching into the night, voluntarily. Gameservers would be perfect for our needs. The Goodfellas server is a gameservers server and it works quite well. It costs $12 a month for a private. I will buy a 12 man private gameserver server for SOTF. Of course I would want to use it during my time slots, but other times it could be reserved. |
