I read about this a few years ago in Popular Science and even did a small presentation about it for a speech class. Some of the coolest things that they want to do with a 3d printer includes fabricating human organs for transplants (as of at least 2 years ago somebody made half a cat's heart in a test), and also making MASSIVE "printers" that will pour quick dry concrete and whatever other materials they program it in order to be able to construct emergency homes for disaster victims in a matter of days.

My high school actually has a 3-D printer, it's amazing. My friend made a catapult in Inventor and printed it out so he could use it in a competition. The catapult worked too.

While the possibilities are indeed awesome, they are also endless, and when I mean endless, I mean bad things could happen, too. Imagine if a terrorist organization got their hands on one. They would be able to produce weapons without trouble- bombs, AKs- or, god forbid, if they had the expertise to put it together- components of a nuclear weapon, or, failing that, at least for a small dirty nuclear bomb-all with relative ease. This technology has the potential to help humanity a great deal, yes. But if it falls into the wrong hands, very bad shit will follow, in a very short amount of time. And yes, I do indeed realize that this does not replicate the EXACT physical and chemical properties of something-yet. Once it does- and trust me, it eventualy will- that kinda of thing could be done.

In the same way that, say, Isaac Newton was a moron? The term 'ignorant' seems more appropriate.

Hmmm. And you, good sir, are called someone who insults people as if they are nine years old. Even if it couldn't make components for nukes, conventional explosives could still be made, along with AKs and stuff.

Seriously, this thing uses paper. It would take at least 10-20 years before it could use any other substance. Probably carbon fiber would be the best they could manage even then. How could a printer system like this make something out of metal? Besides, why would they need to make AK-47s? There are more than enough of them in the world; terrorists are not exactly short on them. What they really need are things like Stinger missiles, shaped charges, nukes, etc., and most of those things would be too complex for any kind of machine like this to make in the forseeable future.

Ooooh, it uses paper? I thought it used some artificial substance. In that case, my mistake. Still, no reason to call me a moron. (Not you Imhi.)
