help with half life and steam
Can anyone tell me how to install half life one into steam, so that i may play TFC online once again?
edit: i just looked on steam, and it seems you have to buy tfc? what a bunch of crap. It was free before steam, right? Last edited by o_stricknine; 04-16-2006 at 07:30 PM. |

Yeah, if you have a Half-Life key, you can just add it to your account, and TFC (along with a bunch of other free mods, CS, DoD, etc.) will also show up.

If you don't have an HL key, but the Half-Life Platinum Pack (roughly $10) and get HL, CS, DoD, TFC, Ricochet, and God knows what else.

The fact that you now have to buy TFC is completely stupid.

You can use any WON CD key afaik. So any of following CD keys should work:
Sierra (not EA): - Blue Shift - Counter-Strike - Gunman Chronicles - Half-Life Activision (not EA): - Day of Defeat EDIT: In the shop you will find only packages from EA/Valve, these will only give you what is described on the box. Do not bother buying used games, chances are the CD key has already been registered with Steam. Ideally you've got one of the aforementioned games already, you just need to register it then. No, which is how it should have always been. Steam just enforces the license you were breaking before steam.

Hate to point out the obvious, buy you can't play TFC unless you have HL1 (and won was always pretty good at keeping out invalid cd-keys) so it's no different now.

The fact that it was once a free mod is the reason that I am mentioning it. I don't really care anyway, I just thought I would point it out even though it was irrelevant.

But is has always been a free mod if you owned a copy of Half-Life. Steam allows you to buy the bare minimum to get playing TFC if you do not already own Half-Life. The only difference now is that you can't use some HL cd key off the net and play TFC without buying Half-Life.

yup. actually i think there was a retail version of TFC that you had to buy back in the WON days if you didn't have HL

Yea, I forgot about that one. I think real networks distributed it or something. The patches for it always lagged behind and they stopped supporting it all together. But again, that cost money because it was for people who didn't have HL.

Haha, i tried adding my half life cd key in, and wouldn't you know it, it's invalid. I must've registered it with some other steam account name back in the day, when steam was a steamy pile. Valve has a way to recover a cd key, but that involves taking a photo copy, and snail mailing it in. Can you believe that? Why can't I just email it in... I think I'd rather just blow ten bucks and buy tfc by itself.

Or if you didn't register it, someone with a key generator did. I've seen it happen.
It may be easier to just buy it again, if you don't wanna wait like 5 days. But you know that already.

It would be easier just to buy it again. It's like $15 to get anything and everything that was ever made for HL1. Not sure what their policy is now, but I think it costs $10 to get your cd key reset or something like that. Could be wrong, but I thought I remembered seeing that before.
