Playing old demos

I know this is an old question but it's been awhile. I want to play an old demo that I think was recorded in WON. I think it was recorded just before the switch from WON to Steam, the date on the file is July 17 2003. I'd really love to see this demo again if possible.

Is there a program that can do this or am I stuck digging up my HL CD and installing the last patch (if I can find it). Help?

I may have that last patch, if you can't find it. I don't think the demos work from WON to Steam, but I could be wrong about it.

Good luck with it, in any case.

Let me know if I can help.

reinstall your old HL again and patch it the version you had while recording this demo. doubt that there is any other way you can get it to run.

If it doesn't work, load the demo in SK Player and have a look at the "network version" in the demo information box. 47 is Steam, 46 is the latest (official) WON version (1.1.1.0).

Or open the demo in a hex editor of choice, e.g. Hex-Wizard, the demo network protocol version thing will be at Byte number (address) 12 (0Ch). E.g. a byte value of 2Fh is 47 decimal = Steam.

It won't be able to play a Steam based demo because of a bug in Steam (you need to load a map before you can view a demo).

It does however display the demo info which can be used to determine which Half-Life version is needed. And that's all I was after.
