Yep, third link now. Maybe it moved up in googles ranking with all those sites now linking to the news page since the launch date was announced. Hell, I even signed up to the forums now rather than lurking in visitor mode.

I think that there needs to be a general understanding that your web pages don't just randomly appear at the top of a web page search engine. With the amount of raw sites that exist, site owners now have to go through many different forms of manual process to actually 'put' their site on the top of the Google page rank.

The more sites that link to Fortress-Forever as well, the more likelihood they will improve their page rank. So start helping them by linking the site from your own web pages :P

Honestly speaking though, you know that the dev team has been working hard when they haven't actually even spent time on establishing a Google page rank, and put all of their resource and energies into getting the mod out.

Establishing a Google page rank in the gaming world is tough, because there are many mainstream sites to compete against, all with their own unique ways of tricking Google

Yeah it's finally showing up on the first page as the third ranked search result.

On a somewhat related note, how did Black Mesa Source get so popular? I check their website / forums occasionally and there's consistently 400-800 people on there at any given time.

Sure it's an extremely impressive mod but what are they doing that fortress forever is not to gain so much exposure? I don't even think there are 500 active members on these forums.

Ah I see. I must have missed those. Has Valve refused to do something similar with FF? I know for a long while even mentions of this mod were disallowed on the steam forums but it was said in the "release" thread that the mod team has had a positive dialogue with Valve.

It's pretty weird, but FF has fluctuated on the google rankings quite a few times. At one point, depending on who googled it, it either showed up at #1 or many, many pages down the list. It was very strange.

ValvE even asked the Black Mesa team for a build of the mod.

Some of you may say that META tags do nothing, but I know for a fact they do.
FF META tags need help.

No, actually they don't. Google, Yahoo, MSN and many others ignore them completely. The reason for this is quite simple, meta tags can easily be abused or misused. Major search engine web crawlers use page ranking algorithms amongst other things to rank individual pages as well as a website in whole.

Linking to people to fortress-forever.com with Fortress Forever in the link aka google bombing will put it at top of list.

Depending on server load, search engines will send you to one of several data centers to process your query, during an update of the algorithm, you'll sometimes see different results until things settle down. It's all pretty normal.

You're both forgetting that there are different META tags, not just one (I.e. description/keywords).

The one that is often in dispute is the keywords tag. IIRC Google was the first search engine not to base their results on the keywords tags, as it left rankings wide-open to abuse. Yahoo/MSN etc quickly followed suite and placed much less emphasis on the keywords.

Search engines now mainly use the relevance of inbound links, the keyword density of the page's content, the page title, and the description meta tag. No-one knows for sure that keywords tag is obsolete, I've seen very mild changes in all the main search engines when playing around with them but there are too many factors involved to say with certainty.

With the number of inbound links this site already has, it should be #1. Fact.

(I hate saying fact but it's true here)

Something has gone wrong somewhere down the line, it's just finding out what.

You make some valid points Atari. I suppose that once FF is out of web buzz phase, and into actual release phase, there'll be a ripple effect of loads more Fortress Forever exposure (because it's out to the general public, not just community who are anticipating it) and then you'll find that most likely the page rank will fix itself up.

We ARE TFC2. (basically, not a port, not quite a sequel)
