This server is Linux CentOS 5, virtual private server with over 300 megs free memory. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Last edited by ~kev~; 09-07-2008 at 03:19 AM. |

Just to make sure my server can do name resolution, I pinged yahoo from the putty console. yahoo.com was resolved to an IP address and the server received a reply from yahoo.
Found part of the problem. I copied the instructions from the thread, and pasted them into putty. a couple of - were converted to . But even with the corrected command ./steam –command update –game hl2mp, the Checking Bootstrapper Version resulted in a delay and time out. Last edited by ~kev~; 09-07-2008 at 03:22 AM. |

My hosting provider said only root can open ports on the server. So I might have to install the FF server as root - but that is something I do not want to do.

If you want the details, my VPS is on a dual processor, quad core and with 300 - 400 megs free memory. I was going to start 12 slot public server. What really cracks me up, is examples like this - https://www.nfoservers.com/order.php http://www.gameserverpimp.com/orders.php For a counterstrike-source server, 12 slot is $29.99 a month. But you say dont run srcds on a VPS. Well that is exactly what these "Rent a game server" companies are doing. There is no way you can turn a profit on a dedicated server at $29.99 a month. Leasing a Dedicated server starts at around $100 a month - http://www.webhostingsearch.com/dedicated-server.php So I am supposed to lease a dedicated server to run one game, when companies are running their servers on a VPS? When you rent a game server, you are renting a VPS. I have been running my own websites for 2 1/2 years, this also means I have been leasing servers for 2 1/2 years. With the amount of free memory I have on my server, compared to the going price of a VPS with 384 megs of memory, compared to the going price of a 12 slot game server, I should be able to run a FF server just fine with the server I already have. If I need to, I will up the ramm on my server to 1 gig instead of 834 megs. Do your own comparison: VPS with 384 megs of memory - $44.95 12 slot CS:S server - $22.99 Now which one do you think has the most resources? Both machines are VPS. The price difference is also the difference in resources that you get. This is not rocket science, sometimes you get what you pay for. A leased vps will have apache, mysql and email (sendmail, postfix) taking up resources, so just kill those processes. The one thing that is stopping me, on the server I have, only root can run processes. This posses a security risk to my other sites. Right now I have 4 websites. None of which can go down because of a security hole in a game server I am running for Yoda. I have to balance my wants and needs. I need my sites up and running 24/7. I want my own FF server. When you rent a game server, you are renting one instance, NOT a VM. They run about 8 severs or so on a computer and you are using oneof those servers.
