TF2 Now Free (F2P)

Thought this deserved it's own thread, references to the new Uber update have already been posted, but I would like to bump this for the Fortress community. TF2 is now free. Would like to see some friends give it a go since some do not own it currently. I'll even give ya some shizzle to help equalize weapons. Peace.

How is it advertising? What FF player is going to see that TF2 is free and quit FF for TF2?

Not me, but possibly others. And it was done right before this new patch. Practically the same thing happened back in 2007 when FF was released nearly the same time as TF2 was. Coincidence?

TF2 has been discussed here at length over the years. I believe one can even see influences from TF2 in FF releases. And at one time FF was going to migrate to the same source version as TF2. So... This thread is for the FORTRESS community, those who love FORTRESS games, TFC (along with it's earlier incarnates), Fortress Forever and Team Fortress 2. Besides it's in the "other games" forum where often games that would directly attract possible FF players are discussed. Including other source mods on the same engine. So Before it starts... everyone chill.

Kube, if I remember FF came out a few days to a week before TF2 was released. My guess is it is not a coincidence. I found it odd and at the same time glad that after all the talk FF suddenly game out right when TF2 was being released. FF delayed my purchase of TF2 in fact!

Maybe, just maybe all the influx of new TF2 players might make FF more visible? We used to get curious TF2 player in ALL THE TIME. I often mention it in TF2 games. Hell if someone make me a spay I'll post it for exposure like those dudes did looking for a developer.

Good point. When I think of free games, I usually think of crappy games I'll play for a week and never play again. TF2, on the other hand, is a very popular game and if people start to realize popular games are free now, maybe, just maybe FF can be seen in the same light.

The shit's really hitting the fan in the TF2 community, people crying and whining, plugins being created to autokick F2P players. It makes the FF community look calm and mature by comparison.

Why would people want to kick free 2 play people? Just because they aren't good at the game yet? How ignorant.

Been playing off and on all day and have yet to see any of that negative shit. Oh there is whining though, but that always happens after a major update. For example the new Solly rocket is a fucking pain in my ass on O and the silent spin up of the heavy is creating some bitching. Nothing like a heavy sneaking up on your ass with no sound

Most people I played with today are excited about the free release.Besides it's been cheap for a long time now and was pretty much included with a bunch of other shit in the original orange box release. Kind of seen it as always free. Like TFC, you could never go and just dl TFC it had to be installed from a Valve game CD

It's mostly the forums. The TF2 official forum does not contain many of the most intelligent or mature people.

Ok... I have a question. Will this give people the ability to play FF by DLing the free version of TF2? If yes, this could be a boon to our community as well. If not, then even free, it's still a rip-off.

I've put in about 4 - 5 hours today or so. It's alright, I still prefer FF, but when FF hasn't got people on, I'll accept it as a backup. I've already found lots of items to replace weapons that do a much better job than the defaults.

And like Panda said to me in chat when we were discussing it, becoming skilled at a game like Fortress Forever for years, means when going over to Team Fortress 2, you already have fast reactions and the ability to pick it up and play. Some things need getting used to, but I found being caked between my level 3 dispenser and level 3 SG and hitting the SG, means you can absorb amazing amounts of damage, kill streaks of 10+ at a time since the dispenser is always feeding you metal to repair. Got the achievement for having a building absorb 2000 damage pretty quickly doing that.

The Heavy with a medic behind him makes the Heavy Weapons Guy worth playing.. even being a medic is somewhat fun.

And it was a nice surprise to see the Scout can infact kill people... the scout in FF is more of a flag runner and has weak weapons, but in TF2 it has such an awesome fast firing shotgun, let me run rings around enemies and blast them apart.

In short, I enjoyed TF2, but I still enjoy Fortress Forever more, much faster paced which suits my style.

I just created a new steam account with no purchased games. Out of everything I have installed, it will let me play TF2, FF, and other mods (and some demos). I would assume that you don't even need to DL TF2, just Source SDK Base 2006.

Strangely, sdk base 2006 shows up in the tools list, but 2007 doesn't and neither does the actual SDK.

Also, all the 2007 (Orange Box) mods I have don't show up in the list. Just the 2006 mods are there. And so is PVKII, which is a Steamworks mod.

Send a message via AIM to squeek.
So FF is now 100% free with a Steam account? No purchases necessary?

(I know you said that this is true, I just need confirmation because it seems too good to actually be true)

Sweet! That's all I needed to know.

TF2 retailed for $20 standalone, which was pretty modest then, and the $10 it's been going for these past months is an absolute steal.

Anyways, everyone should have seen this coming a mile away after Valve put in the in-game store, so this isn't really surprising. But now that it's free, you should all give it a try. All you naysayers be damned, this is a fun game.
