FF Mapping: A start

Should I simply be using the HL2 base?

And about when will you have the FF entities ready (flags, etc etc)?

And on a related note: Hammer is frustrating as hell. Just as I'm getting things done, it crashes, locks up.
I tried mapping a bit a LONG time ago....
Now I know why I didn't keep going with it. I just have a couple of cool ideas and I want to try it out again.
Fun but pissing me off (though that isn't hard to do).

Hammer is definetely a bit frustrating at first. I've heard about other people having problems with random crashes, but I've only experienced one such occurance. Unfortunately, I lack the mind to create an original base. I've finished numerous respawns only to run out of ideas shortly thereafter .

If you can't think of a nice room, I would also agree that sketching is a good bet. I generally sketch anything I'm doing these days -- it helps with overal style and layout. You can fix something that doesn't quite work out on paper very quickly. Editing a half completed map is a different story -- especially when certain areas connect in such a way that rooms are back-to-back etc.

Hello all.
I haven't kept up with the mapping scene in a bit. Is Hammer the editor used for making FF maps? I've used Hammer a lot for TFC maps and the learning curve was slight. The more you use it, the easier it gets.

And, if anyone knows what editor is used for making Enemy Territory Fortress maps... Q3Radient?

If Hammer is used for FF maps, I have a map for submittal if you accept those.

Thank you for your time.

FF uses hammer.
ETF uses GTKRadiant.

Yea, I've been sketching everything out on paper first. Trying to work out the yard first. Then I'm going "inside".
I wish I wasn't basically starting out all over again 'cause I see how I want everything in my head but I just can't do it physically.

After using real 3d Modeling apps such as Max/Maya/XSI, using Hammer feels like making a sculpture with a Sledgehammer...

get it??? hammer? ahahah!@!#@#$#sorry@#%

Plus, Hammer is buggy as hell. I was building a very simple tutorial level (the "single room w/ a magnum" example), and noticed that my hard-disk was thrashing for no evident reason. I checked the task-manager, and found that Hammer was using over 600 Megs of ram, and Steam was using over 100!

Jiggles, I noticed that also. I have to close just about everything if I'm using hammer.

Yeah it canes my PC, especially the memory
The worst thing about it is the crashing whilst using displacement maps imo. Mine crashes every five mins when I'm doing a lot of displacement work.

To someones question:
The hammer you made tfc with is the same editor you use for ff.
Download the new hammer from Steam: SourceSDK.

Then port it over and go crazy.
