The Monarchy Poll
Pure and simple, should the British monarchy stay?
I keep strongly to my opinion but I won't state it here because I don't want to subliminally influence your answer. |

it's a matter of identity. they serve as great role models (well, most of them) and are lifelong representatives of our country.

I expect a good portion of the U.S. sentiment is "Don't care".

- Since 1952, The Queen has conferred over 387,700 honours and awards. - The Queen is patron of more than 620 charities and organisations. - Every year The Queen sends Christmas trees to Westminster Abbey, Wellington Barracks, St Paul's Cathedral, St Giles, Edinburgh, The Canongate Kirk, Edinburgh, Crathie Church and local schools and churches in the Sandringham area. - The Queen is the first member of the Royal Family to be awarded a gold disc from the recording industry. 100,000 copies of the CD of the 'Party at the Palace', produced by EMI, were sold within the first week of release. That's just a tiny amount of what she does, and that's just the Queen... They do a lot for the community. The Prince's Trust is another useful organisation originating from the monarchy, helping unemployed and uneducated youths by providing finance and training. Just so you know I'm not lying (http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/page3953.asp) So they aren't really useless. They use their position as sovereigns for good, or else, they wouldn't exist. |

It seems like England is doing well with it, so there is no reason to go and change it. Unless they pull a "V for Vendetta".

This has actually been a pet peeve of mine. Follow the reasoning for just a little bit.
First, how did the current monarchy come into power? As far as that goes, how did ANY previous monarchy come into power? Obviously, their ability to rule came about through overthrowing the previous monarchy. If you wanted to be a monarch, simply get an army and kill the current ones and the position is yours. Now, if the only reason monarchies existed is because they were able to overthrow a previous power by force what chance is there that the current monarchy would EVER cease to exist? It's no longer acceptable to go through the process of overthrowing the monarchy so consequently they will continue to exist in perpetuity simply through default. The validity of the monarchy ceases to exist because they are in power simply through tradition and not through earning the position of power by defeating challenging oppositions. Simply put, you're simply playing prince and princess games because the validity of the position has been lost. I guess if you like to play 'pretend' just go ahead and do so but please don't expect any respect for the position because violent overthrow is no longer an allowable alternative to installing a new monarchy. I guess you should remember to get your Barbie dolls out too while your playing with your prince and princesses. |

Perhaps there should have been other poll options. I am unaware of the Monarchy having any role other than that of a figurehead. If that's the case is it beneficial to the country? If there's no benefit why continue throwing money at it then?
