Macintosh Lan Party
Hey guys.
After my finals for my Web Design class, the teacher introduced the idea of having a LAN party for the last two hours. Now, this sounds like a bitchin' idea- but there are limitations: 1) We can't install anything onto the computers. Thus, anything we play should be localized onto a flashdrive, CD, etc. 2) They're Macs. Yeah, thats a problem. 3) Of course, online LAN capabilities for hopefully 30 people. The only game I've even found for Macs so far that could possibly match these restrictions is Marathon from Bungie. Can any of you guys think of how we could pull this off? Btw. All the Macs are Intel Macs. |

Can't install and probably not tied to the net. Sounds like a rousing game of MAC-OS I-Spy in the works...a genuine sausage fest...
On a serious note...what about hunting up networkable flash games? I'm sure they're out there I just cannot think of them at present...nothing out of the ordinary need be installed and they utilize existing resources...

I would say Warsow is the way to go.
It has a mac port and runs off a thumbdrive or CD or even on a HDD without any installation. I personally have not played it much but it's quite well know as one of the better free FPSs. EDIT: fuhQuake MIGHT have multiplayer... you need to try it out first. I'm also looking through SF.net right now for mac games Last edited by Mooga; 05-17-2008 at 03:39 AM. |

All the games from Blizzard are Mac compatible. Go oldschool with Starcraft, now with no-cd ability.
Install it at home, update to latest patch, copy Starcraft.mpq (Starcraft only) or Broodwar.mpq (Brood War installed) to Starcraft directory. Burn to disk or copy to a flash drive; it'll run independently now. |

The problem is starcraft is legality. Running 30 copies of starcraft is far from legal and doing such thing at a school is generally a bad idea.

I thought about Warsow, but I also concidered that a lot of the kids in my class aren't very gaming oriented- and a Quake 2 ON CRACK mod might not go over well.
I'll look into the networkable Flash games, that seems to probably be the best bet. That way I won't need to burn like 30 CDs. :P Thanks guys. |

However there is a mac port of Wormux!
I thought you wanted a full 30 person game though EDIT: Wormux only has local multiplayer... no network play Last edited by Mooga; 05-17-2008 at 01:25 PM. |

wormux sucks, it's slow, and its focused on art than gameplay and such. It even has some pretty bad swearing so a school environment wouldn't be okay for it.
Hedgewars is a bit more mature projectwise and is newer, and has AI and multiplayer. It's also fast http://hedgewars.org. There is no mac version yet however but keep tabs on one for the future Another quick multiplayer game to play without installing is Teeworlds http://www.teeworlds.com/ Last edited by leilei; 05-17-2008 at 04:44 PM. |
