Cafe Accounts Question

We've occasionally had problems with Cafe Accounts, so as a general rule when one person is a problem and is banned the entire place is toast. We had this happen this evening:

I don't know how Cafe Accounts work, do they just cycle to a new steam-id everytime they open the game, or do you think these guys move from machine to machine and each machine has it's own steam-id? We have probably 20 or so accounts from this particular cafe that have been nuked over the years.

first, a smartass response:
dont ban everyone for stupid reasons
second, a real one:
i would recommend bringing this up to Valve, as that seem it wouldhave to do with them. submit a ticket.

first off, its OT's server than can ban for whatever they want.

second, he did bring it up on the steam forums, with the only responses being as useless as your first response. personally i'd love for there to be a way to ban cafe accounts all together, its a much needed feature.

I thought cafe accounts worked like that.

I'm pretty sure when someone hacks, and is banned by Valve in a Cafe, it only bans the steamid. It's up to the Cafe owner to see that they've been hacking, and take care of it that way. If those steamid's are the store's owned ones, they could probably sue, but I doubt much will come from something like that.

As far as your server goes, not giving access to cafes is kind of retarded, because it's disallowing people to play. You don't know if someone is going to be disruptive or not at a cafe, just like you don't know if a single person is going to cause trouble. Not much you can do in this situation, but you could probably contact Valve, open a ticket, and they might give the business a call letting them know what's up and how to prevent a person from doing such things in the future.

Ok anymore bashing and your ban go it? this is your warning and you know who you are....

Also from what I remember, Steam Cafe accounts make a new steam account every time, not sure though, I think I read that in a warez site somewhere.

Here's the thing though, I think there's a level of recycling that goes on. Usually it's a random thing, but every now and then we'll get an old Cafe Account that will connect, it'll update the IP addresses, and the data miner will ban a bunch of new accounts from that server that we didn't know were Cafe Accounts. Most of those accounts will have mutes, or kicks, or what have you, associated with them too... which makes the "light" go on. I don't know if they are from the same cafe or just another cafe that got that ID...

I know some people think nuking Cafe Accounts is stupid, and I can understand people believing it's limiting players, but we have had such HUGE issues with them. The people playing know they can get away with anything and will do whatever they want, spawn camp, mic spam, block the doors, etc, because if we ban just one they can come right back with a new ID and a new name and start all over again. Valve has been absolutely no help, and they even refuse to give out the ranges that cafe accounts belong too. I know most accounts starting with 7 are cafe accounts... but I've seen them with 8s and the occasional 9...

Yeah, I've used a few channels to ask questions... valve isn't interested in answering any of them. Unless you pay the cash they aren't going to say crap about how they work.

Well I think it being a cafe it would have a static IP. So if you ban the main IP from the cafe you should be good.

I had a guy I banned for being a douche bag and he was like please steam ID thats easy I banned like four ID's then banned His IP and all was good.

Unfortunately this particular cafe doesn't have a static IP... OR cafe accounts are reused from one cafe to another, which could be possible, who knows, valve won't say.... Someone once tried to convince me they were never reused, which is ludicrious (and we can prove it through data). Either way, when a previously banned account from a cafe hits with a new IP the system mines all the additional steam-ids on that IP... So one banned cafe could mean multiple banned cafe's. The whole idea is just a pain in the ass. Why bother banning steam accounts for cheating if they can create a new one two seconds later? Bah.

I run a steam cafe server with 30 licenses.
When I set up servers for us, I have to give saved slots to IPs and NOTsteam IDs because they always change.

If you want me to test anything for you, let me know.

Do you choose what games they can play, or does a steam cafe slot get any game it wants?

Steam cafe only gets some games. When a company teams up with steam they can chose if they want to accept the cafe licensing plan or not. So we have tons of games, but not everything available via steam.
We can choose which games automatically get installed on the computers but I think users can right click and install other games on the list.

I don't know about third-party mods since I've never used any with steam cafe.
