Horror

Both Outlast and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs are shit.

Outlast was fairly scary at first but the mutated humans aren't scary after 30 mins. I found myself not giving a fuck running around. And as for A Machine for Wigs....zzzz.

That is all.

edit: To be fair Outlast isn't "shit" it has its moments...and I haven't finished yet but very disappointing compared to the trailer. They tricked my at least into thinking that was in-game footage/gameplay when it wasn't.

edit2: Outlast's ending was pretty good :O

Horror games are shit in general.

To be a good horror game, you have to have nothing.

It can't be a game. Wait, uh. Kinda defeats the point.

More of a horror interactive movie.

I think you have to be young, early teens. Back in the day Silent Hill 1 and Res 1/2 terrified me.

I enjoyed Dead Space 1 & 2. Sure, they had a lot of jump scares but it was always tense anyway and didn't feel too cheap. I felt very immersed and fearful, the story was actually interesting. 3 was a bag of shit.

Alan Wake was another I very much enjoyed.

Any game with a shitty ending can be pretty horrific, but other than being a smart ass, uh, I don't know of any 'good' horror games.

As a kid, there's a handful of games with a creepy atmosphere and such but thinking back at them now, that's the only thing a video game can do when it comes to frightening you, besides adding in basic jump scares. Video games aren't good for horror, only movies.

And jump scares are dumb, it's more worthy to be frightened by music, ambience, atmosphere, etc. Putting jump scares everywhere may make me jump for about a second but that's not how you make something scary.

Jump scares are hilarious when done correctly. It's when a game tries too hard to include them that makes them dumb. As long as they are cleverly placed and not overdone, I think there's room for them. I thought Half Life 1 was kinda like that. Also, Resistance 2 for the PS3 had some parts where I jumped. I've not played too many 'horror' games but I've seen some clips of a few like Dead Space or Fear that would probably make me jump a lot.

after thinking about what made games scary when I played them on the ps1 I think was atmosphere, limited resources, and dreadful consequences to dying

that opinion is based off resident evil 1 -- the music and effects (are those crows I hear ahead?), fixed camera angles (what's around that corner?) -- and then having limited ink ribbons to be able to save the game compounded the effects of the atmosphere since you didn't want to die

that's why alan wake wasn't scary for me. if you ever died you'd just respawn near where it happened. it made me feel like jumping around and off cliffs and stuff for fun and that of course defeated its purpose

games haven't been as scary since they started to have them mix as 1st person action - you have too much freedom of sight/movement and ammo isn't treated as much like a relic. but games like penumbra were ok, they had the limited resources part (there's not even weapons..) and a good atmosphere

"horror games" are more like "anxiety games" since that's what they're based on instead of fear I think, since the action part was added. you can't feel helpless when you've got some hefty weapons

lol after seeing the monster and looking down at the puddle I thought he peed his pants in that outlast vid. the pitfalls of 1st person
