Lack of maps on servers
From what I understand, there are dozens, maybe even a hundred maps for fortress forever. Then why are so many servers only running 3, 4, 5 or 6 maps in their rotation?
On thing that has turned me off of FF recently is the lack of maps in the rotation. I'am getting tired of playing between openfire, aardvark, ksour well and 2fort. I fully understand that server admin will run their server as the see fit. But why not throw a few more maps into the rotation? |

I think it's a quality thing as much as anything else.
Anyway, at a stage where the mob is not that popular it's a good idea to have the best maps on show as often as possible and to have less of the 'server emptying' maps or random custom maps that newbs can't be bothered to get or learn. |

Basically like on the AE server I go with the proven maps. If I put a new map on the server and everybody leaves because the map has bad FPS or just Bad game play then you pull it from rotation.
I've been trying to stay as true to the default rotation as I can.

I guess because a single 'bad' map in a server rotation can clear a server. They try to keep people on the server by playing maps they know people will play.
It'd say it's one of the reasons we're striving to improve our official maps and game play. I'm pretty sure that maps are getting played more as we fix the things that cause people to leave when it loads. This, we hope, will mean people can put more maps into rotation. Another reason (a reason we only put a few maps into the default server rotation), is so that newbs can learn a set few maps and get used to them rather than having to learn a new map every level change. There, of course, are other reasons involved as to why there are only a few maps in rotation but those are 2 that come to mind. |

So far, bad frames per second and poor design has been mentioned a couple of times. How much trouble would it be to make an "official FF developer approved" map list? These would be maps that meet a certain standard on FPS and design.
Then we could have a section in this forum just for the "officially approved maps" - with screen shots and a link to download the map. This could help server owners filter through the maps and only offer the best ones on their server. To approve the maps, maybe make a "map testing night", where the map could be put on a 24 hour rotation for a weekend. That maps schedule could be posted here so people would know about it. If the map is rejected, its sent back to the developer for improvements. Reconsideration could be no sooner then 30 days after the last test. This give the developer a whole month to change things up. This might promote quality changes instead of quick fixes. |

We tried that kev. It's better for FF to stay neutral. But this creates the problem of "why his map got in and my didn't". Which is why the mapping section was made.

Kev, I do not know what servers you have been sticking to, but it sounds like you should change it up from time to time.
I have not seen this problem on our server, we have at least 40 maps, if not more, to pick from in rotation, not to mentions ones admins can load. I didnt even know this was a problem anywhere. With all the maps, and good community in your server, even maps like ksour, which are fuking demo spam fests, which always drop everyones fps, are not horrible experiances, because we try make sure that everyone on the server is having fun. Most people will bitch about a map, but if the server is a fun place, they stick around and play the maps, even if they are wanting to rtv. I dont see the lack of maps as a problem, just peoples willingness to learn new maps is weak, because alot of people do not talk to each other in game. I get on my mic, and try to explain the maps to anyone who says they are lost. In doing so, we now play many different maps. |
