Any D&D geeks lookin' at Pathfinder?
I just got the beta version (available as a free PDF by the way) and it's lookin' pretty cool so far.
Looks like every race gets two bonuses and a penalty for stats, the Barbarian uses a rage point system rather than just raging for X rounds. Looks pretty sick.

I see the word Pathfinder, and I think of Aliera's great-sword.

I never played anything past AD&D 1st edition. Took a look at 2nd edition, and decided it was too complicated to be fun. Took all the imagination out of it.

I've all but given up on 4th Edition.
I just... can't get into it. The way the powers are done feels more like a card game (the power cards don't help). I like that I can consistently use more powerful attacks, but with there only being a select few at wills that you keep pretty much forever... I dunno. It doesn't help that my DM kinda sucks and all we do is combat after combat. But when a system is balanced solely for combat, it skips out on a lot of options. We never had a situation in our previous games where, for example, the sagely wizard wasn't pulling his own weight in combat - the other characters were more than capable of pulling it for him. He had other concerns, not geared toward combat, and his character was built for such. That was fine - if he could cast a fireball here or there he was more than doing his job. Meanwhile, out of combat, he could save our asses in other ways than 4e Wizards don't have the capacity for - not mechanically, anyway. In 4e, every character is a combat character. So the game tends to focus more on combat because of that. If I had a better DM it might not be such an issue, though. I just need to play it more, I guess.

FWIW, I still have my full 2nd edition of books. When my son has his cousins over for sleepovers I've thought about getting a game going...but then the youngest is 8...who knows what the nightmare risk is there...

Well I'm one of those people who enjoys breaking the system. Planar Shepherd ahoy!
Most of the non combat spells/stuff went into rituals, and there's always skills. I think it's mostly your DM. 4th edition is geared more towards combat but the roleplaying is what you make of it. |

Shit, it's free?
I haven't played in a while now, and it was version 3. Was quite fun using magic and making choices- very few video games allow that kind of freedom. (Although many are starting to get there.) You know, there are online chat clients for playing pen and paper RPGs over the net, perhaps we could get a few community members to get a game going? I know it's simply not the same as playing in real life, but it could still be some fun. All we would really need is an IRC script for various dice rolls, a few players, and we would be set.

The full version will be OGL, just like the beta - which means, in some form or another, it'll be completely free. The hardcover edition will be $49.99. Most likely it'll contain either supplemental non-OGL rules, or artwork and miscellany that the OGL version won't have. Still, hardcover editions rule. Quote:

I've used OpenRPG in the past, but so long as it's free I don't have any real preference. I also know an IRC server with a plethora of dice bots and such, that'd be an acceptable alternative.

I just got back from Gencon and I played a bit of 4th there. It wasn't bad, but then again I haven't played much D&D in my life, and the last time I played was years ago with 2, not 3 or 3.5, but 2. I did go to a seminar where the guy speaking was the co-creator of D&D, that was pretty awesome.
