If lack of humor were an achievement, this video ... ugh. Achievements can be fun, but it depends on how they work. If the system requires you do monotonous or overly difficult tasks for a specific item or to 'better' yourself, then I think that's bullshit. Achievements should be optional and for nothing but bragging rights, which leads me to my next point: Achievements that are optional and for bragging rights should be extremely difficult, so there's an actual reason to brag. They should be fun to obtain, and require hard work, and when I say hard work, I don't mean grinding. Like, a task that requires you to multi task properly and defeat a boss, but not defeating five trivial little bosses that require no multi task or train of thought in a row.

I agree wholeheartedly Scuzzy, ever since the fateful day when I realized Valve gave achievements for beating each chapter of their new Half-life 2 games I realized that achievements were a sham.
EDIT I don't want to rip on achievements as a whole, but beating the game is part of the game, if they could give them out for superhuman feats I might understand, but for the love of all that is good, not for beating the game on easy... really. Well, I'll put it like this.
I've never gone back and done all of the achievements of games I did not enjoy. Period. However, games that I do enjoy playing generally have me playing them. There is no difference there. The difference is that an achievement gives me more things to do when replaying a game. In other words, if a game isn't fun then the achievements aren't fun. Also, completion achievements are for developers, not the player. They use them to gauge when people may have stopped playing a game, how long they played, how many players played a certain game mode, etc. There ARE some actual games where achievements are fun. Prince of Persia had some of the best achievements that extended a rather short game while having the achievements feel like naturally playing the game. Some games do them right. Others do not.

Yeah, some achievements in Warcrack are entertaining, especially the type that require you to actually put forth effort to attain, usually dungeon associated. The achievements in Fallout 3 are generally just "Hey, congrats, you actually did something!" much like the stuff on Steam.

Sure, there's a few here and there that are just handed out like pie; but for the majority of them, your actually required to put some sort of effort towards. |

I mean, honestly, the people who are cranky about achievements should just ignore them. It's not exactly difficult. If you're pissed about how easy they are to get, why? It's free points. If the points are worthless to you, then why bitch about them? If you're pissed about feeling the need to get all of them... perhaps you should get a life. If you get pissed about people on the internet "getting in your face about it", you should probably get off the internet and go back to preschool.
If you like the game enough, you'll get the achievements for them. Good for you. |

Achievements should be something worth showing off. Like kills streaks, hard shots or cool happenings. Things that you don't need to do to play and enjoy the game, but at least recognize that you did something cool.
I don't like obnoxiously impossible achievements that are really rewarding the lack of a social life and I also do not like stupid achievements that you would have to get through in order to play the game. Like beating a boss. Congratulations! You didn't die! |
