DRM Hell - Ubisoft
Since I always start the DRM threads...
As most of you know, Ubisoft has implemented a highly-criticized DRM that requires your computer to be connected to the game server CONSTANTLY. If your connection drops, you lose all progress since you last saved and must shut down the game. While this is a non-issue for many people who are connected to the internet 100% of the time, the DRM makes the game 100% IMPOSSIBLE to play without an internet connection or with a weak connection. The big fight is: Will pirates defeat the DRM? While some public sites claim to have the game cracked, Ubusoft has denied it. One team has "cracked" Silent Hunter 5 to the point that it can be installed and ran. However, some pirates are currently unable to accept missions. Last edited by Mooga; 03-05-2010 at 06:08 AM. |

I really don't see this stopping piracy, It is early days yet and I believe that yes Silent Hunter 5 has been cracked for initial play but a connection check later drops you out of the game... According to what I have been reading anyway. I've never been one for playing games unless they have (good) online multiplayer.

No you're not :P
http://forums.fortress-forever.com/s...ad.php?t=21428 http://forums.fortress-forever.com/s...ad.php?t=21405 I've also heard that with Supreme Commander 2 if you buy the game in store you still have to download close to half of it once you install off DVD. This is only from once source not personal experience, but I will see if I can dig up some more info on this. And yes it was funny to watch some people say "this DRM from Ubisoft will not be cracked" and then about a day later its been cracked. I don't know how much they spent on the DRM, but aren't people glad to know that they are spending at least $150,000 to $200,000 bucks for something that worked for less then 24 hours. I'm not totally against DRM, I'm just against stupid DRM and this was way past stupid. |

DRM never hurts the pirates. It does hurt honest buyers.
So yes, Pirates have already defeated DRM, and will continue to in the future.

Meanwhile pirates are playing their cracked versions, and honest buyers are getting screwed. Further proof DRM is a joke.

yup, though I'm sure there are many legit people who downloaded the cracked version before/after buying the game just so they could play without having to put up with the DRM.

I wish more companies would take approaches like Stardock and realize man hours developing DRM are completely wasted and instead focus on the product 100%. If it's going to be a good game, people are going to buy it to play it online. You have to accept your single player is going to be ripped off to no end and some point and be proactive about it

I like what BioWare did with Mass Effect 2. They released the game with launch DLC, but to get the DLC you had to join the 'Cerberus Network' to get it, and there was only a limited number of Cerberus Network activations.

Anyone who buys the game new, gets an account. This allows them to get any free DLC and allows them to buy DLC. Anyone who buys the game used, will not get an account, unless they pay another 20 bucks for an account. Then they will be allowed to get the free DLC, and be able to buy DLC. I think its stupid, because if someone is selling the game then they can't access the free DLC or even paid for DLC with their account so why shouldn't all that stuff go with the game if they sell it? |

Its things like DRM that are encouraging more people to crack the product. And for good reason. But the companies wont give up anytime soon.
