Converting HD movies from PSN

well, my googling skills are apparently failing me, and i cant seem to find an answer for this anywhere. hopefully some of you might be able to help...

ive purchased some HD movies off of the PSN store and downloaded them to my ps3. i thought it would be no problem just to transfer the movies to an external hard drive, but apparently i was wrong. because of the DRM bullshit that is attached to the movies, simply copying them to an external hard drive is not possible.

what you CAN do is 'backup' the movies to an external hard drive, which basically copies it over into into parts with file extensions of .001, .002, and .bkp. ive tried to rename these files as .mp4 and .mkv just to see if it would work, but no dice. ive googled a bunch of combinations of "ps3 video converter backup hd video, etc etc" but to no avail.

so... anyone have any idea how i can convert these backed up HD movies (in file formats .001, .002, and .bkp) to a format that is watchable on a PC (and burnable to disk)?

Due to the DRM on the files it is not possible to directly copy them. You must use an HDMI capture device to re-record them if you wish to burn them / watch on PC. Sorry

You could use an HD PRV but i doubt its worth getting unless you're doing some serious recording

yeah its not worth it to get anything serious like a capture card or a pvr. ended up just getting a bigger (and faster) hdd for the ps3 so i wont have to worry about disk space for a while.

mooga, its called getting the the movies nearly for free anyways and watching HD movies through HDMI to my HDTV being far more enjoyable than watching them on my laptop. thanks for your incredibly helpful suggestion though.

I would get a capture device tbh. Being able to record your gaming stuff in HD is just too cool.

You can pipe the video from your computer to a TV via HDMI.

not when my laptop doesnt have an HDMI output. as it is, its plugged into the TV via VGA (the only output my computer has) into my TV, but due to the video card sucking, i cant do a screen res more than 1074x768 to my TV, and fussing about with aspect ratios and whatnots is more trouble than its worth, especially when im getting HD movies for $1.60 apiece. wow, run-on sentence.

Is there just .001 and .002 files or does it go .003, .004, etc?
