Community-built map?

I used to play around in Rollercoaster Tycoon as a younger teen and one of the things the community would do is have someone start a rollercoaster, add a unique piece of track to it, and then pass it onto someone else. They would inturn add a piece to the track, and pass it onto someone new to repeat the process, until it ended with a totally unique rollercoaster built by a dozen or so people. I was wondering, would anyone want to try the same thing for FF? Would it work? Obviously, it would be an AVD/IVD map. Ideas, suggestions, etc, if any.. S:

Kami did this with a concmap, it turned out pretty well. But that was in '03 or so.

it works best if you come up with a global layout, then divide it into separate rooms which have fixed exits. Then everyone starts doing a room, based on the fixed exits. Preferably a similar style / texture set should be used.

I want a concCTFrocketADLcomandpoint map, make it happen

lOl j/k

That would be cool for a ADL map that resets to a new point every cap like dustbowl so each person could make a point

This actually happened with one of the guys from Axl's TFC. I think Lee put everything together for a pair of apartment buildings, each room designed by a member of the Axl community. This was before TEH banned me for no real reason (he liked doing that).

Dropdown started off as a community map, but shax finished it off due to no interest from others.

I'd really like doing a room in a community map. That'd be fun stuff.

lee_axl_apartments was a pretty big success. All we need is a room template for members to make use of.

That'd be nice. Have everybody use units divisible by 2, have a requirement for doors and lead ins to other rooms (like 72 units wide for a door just as an example). I think it would really well with with FF. Perhaps even having a theme to boot. Like a castle, steampunk, or futuretech. Or hell, even having it be up to the user! That'd make for some neat stuff.

I'd really like to do this. I could really use a brushing up on hammer as I've been without for about a month now.

i've always thought this sorta thing was a great way to bring the community together as well as being alot of fun to be involved with, however we've tried, or other ppl have, to no avail.

i'm down if you get the plans together or whatever.

The template used for Axl Apartments was just the room. It's up to the head mapper to tie it all together. Each member got to choose their own theme.

Could you elaborate a bit more on it? Like, the layout was done and everybody just chose what room they wanted to do? Or was it the same room tied to each other over and over again?

Same room tied to each other and over and over again. Here's a wonderful picture I drew:

The window could be added by the community member making their own room. The littler picture is a runoff of one of the rooms in Axl Apartments: One guy had a DJ booth and dance pad in his room. I think there was also a fire-escape on the rear, but I'm not sure. That or it was a half of a hallway.

I was thinking of community built AVD maps, not a fun map (though that's a cool idea too). Three captures per map, each capture stage is designed and themed by a different person, and is cut off from the previous and future stage.

I like that to be honest.

I don't wanna rain on your parade but like Geokill said, Dropdown started as a community map until I decided to do it all myself cause nobody else was doing anything anymore. Mapping with others is a real challenge all by itself, let alone making an actual playable map lol. All sorts of problem can arise, just for example, people sometimes want to go in different art directions and have different themes just like you mentioned, and that would be cool...only problem is that it would lead to a gigantic texture memory load which would render the map unplayable just like hunted was before.

Anyways, good luck with it if you really wanna give it a try, but I would advise to be ready to make the map all by yourself in case everyone else drops out so it can be finished someday. Oh and keep in mind that everybody has to agree on a set of textures to use. Like I said, the map won't be playable if there's too many different textures in it.

See, this is why the Axl community did a fun map. Something as big as an AvD map requires lots of time and dedication from individual mappers. Having everyone make a little room is much easier for most members of the community, and also opens it up to more people.
