Mouse pads can help quite a bit with tracking, depending on the pad. For me personally, my desk is relatively worn, so I need a smoother surface for quick mouse movements, as well as a solid optical mouse.

Thank you very much for the link! For some reason it isn't working, but that coud be related to the fact that I am on an iPad. I will look into it a bit later.

I use a *coughcough* TF2 mousepad from the Valve store. It's surface got worn from all the use it gets, but it still works like a champ and flows much better than a regular one (even for ball mice, when I had to use one).
