the source engine is an ongoing project. with every new release, they usually include some new features added to the engine (HDR, dod:s effects, etc).

agreed, it is an ever evolving engine. When i go back and look at the early screenshots of CSS , and compare to the visuals now, theres alot that has improved. I think it will continue to evolve and fit the needs of games as they arise.

But imma no0b here so what do i know ... lol

peace love and chicken grease

I don't think the engine has improved significantly since it was released (aesthetically) other than HDR, phong and a few other things. The main reason CS:S got much better looking was that they put more resources into it using Turtle Rock as a contractor. It's only natural that the more you work with an engine, the more you can squeeze out of it and the better the maps will look. Those Turtle Rock guys are really talented, and the maps that valve worked on later on were also better quality than the originals (I believe Cliffe made a return to mapping for the assault remake which looks excellent). Also, when you release maps many months after the original game shipped, you can afford to add more detail as the average player's PCs will generally get a bit faster.

Anyway, the biggest overhaul will be the coming updates. It looks like they're going to add shadow mapping, self shadowing etc. which is long overdue. Shadowing is the major weakness of source -- planar shadows are archaic.

I can actually say I've heard of a source 2... per the fact that I wasn't paying that much attention, I can't remember where it was written, or what it was about. But I figured I would throw in that I have also heard about such a thing

Always has been my biggest peeve with the Source engine. I still find it shocking that planar shadows are still present to this day in the engine. Thank god someone realized this should be fixed :/

I think also, one of the big things to be added to the Source engine is the ability to operate on multiple cores.

Multithreaded

I personally think the next real update will be the release of HL2 when its Multithreaded. Here is a link: HL2 Multithreaded. Its looking good for the new dual/quad core processors out there.
