buy Quake off of Steam. Then download/google nQuake. nQuake is quake DM with a server interface, so you dont need to type in the IP address every freakin time.

If you happen to own HL1 you can download the game "Deathmatch Classic." It's the same thing, more or less. Obtaining Quake 1 should be as easy as putting it into Google, since any authentication process for that game should be extinct by now. Of course, there's absolutely no guarantee anyone is playing either one anymore.....they just don't hold many folks attention these days.

You could try any game in the Halo series......it's mostly similar, and I hear it's pretty popular......if you want to pay a lot more.

You could also try any of the Perfect Dark MODS.....it's got all kinds of cool guns. You could even get the original, and an N64 pretty cheap these days. It's got a cool feature......Bots! It's also got 4-player split screen, but I've since given that up when I stopped playing my N64 back in 1998.

If you have a PC then you should definitely buy Half-Life 2......you may have heard of it. It's version of deathmatch is rad, and you get to use a weapon called the "Gravity Gun." It's a real steal at $20.....you get lot's more with it......and I hear it's also quite popular.

Well, this has been another job well done for Facetious Man! I'm off to spread redundancy wherever it's most needed! Up, up, and up some more!

(Thanks for the hand-off BTW)

I always felt DMC captured the quake feeling quite nicely.

lol...I've got Perfect dark for the N64, I've got HL2, I've got Halo, just need to get a copy of Deathmatch classic, though I thought that was from valve.

Also, screw you for being so sarcastic.

Yes, it was. Both of those. And I'm going to play Deathmatch Classic if it's a hl1 mod and not a game from steam. Bah it's a game from steam.

Seriously dude, if you own Half-Life 1, that entitles you to play Deathmatch Classic......it's an "official" HL1 MOD.....just like TFC and CS.....and no extra fee.

Sort of. There are a number of free GPL clients out, eg EZquake (http://ezquake.sourceforge.net), but the original Quake 1 game content (models, maps, sounds, textures) is still copyright.

However there's a free package of non copyright Quake 1 compatible replacement content called OpenQuartz (http://openquartz.sourceforge.net).

If you put these two together and optionally add a 24 bit retexture package, you end up with a pretty hot looking FPS, even compared to FF.. but unfortunately no one really plays Quake 1 anymore so it might get boring quick.

That's off of Quake3. Quake3 isn't Quake. You can't zap the water. Physics are a lot more bouncy too.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned using the DarkPlaces engine. It connects to Quakeworld too

You should buy the CD version instead of any download, neat ambient soundtrack.

As for Open Quartz, i'd improve it myself, but the MDL exporting pipeline is hideous. MD2 pipeline is just as bad, which is why you don't see any truly Free Quake2-ishes. (no, Alien Arena, Quake2World and Warsow don't count)

I actually just got Doom2 and Quake running on my Nintendo DS. I even dug up my original WAD or PAK files so I could access everything. FWIW, Doom2 plays cleaner and better on that platform...now if I can figure out how to hook a mouse and keyboard up to it...

I usually play DMC over Steam. You won't get eaten up by pros if you play it. In fact, most of the players have never touched Quake in their lives, so it's easy to tear them apart if you know how to use the RL half-decently.
