Yeah, I heard Dell is saying after XP, they're going to install Ubuntu into their systems rather than Vista.

Dell is selling vista with xp loaded. MS did a special "downgrade" OEM license. Nice. You get XP with vista pre loaded and ready to go... when you are.

It was my understanding that after June 30 MS was no longer shipping XP. Any builds of XP that ship now are just residual product in the various channels. When I bought my new laptop it was only one of a handful of HP's at Newegg that had XP pre-installed with a license....I had also researched this model to make sure that XP drivers were readily available.

As to the original intent of this thread I still maintain that there are situations where each OS will have advantages....including Vista.

"Technically" you are buying Vista with an XP downgrade license. More expensive than a regular copy of VISTA. MS can't stop shipping it to Business. We won't buy it. I ordered 15 desktops yesterday with Vista/XP on them. I was going to post the info on it but www.dell.com is DOWN. lol.

Personal Consumers are fuxorz I guess?

Probably. I have a couple of XP OEM's on hand as well as the upgrade packs I bought years ago for my gaming system and my son's.

Arch is complicated to me @_@

I don't know a lot of Linux. Newbie, ftw? I download tarballs and then I stare at them on my desktop, going like, "umm... what do I do with these?"

Window's .exe is so much easier on me...

Tarballs are just another way to compress data, like zip files. If you're compiling source code from a tarball it's easy:

tar xvf file.tar.gz
cd thenewdirectoryjustcreated
./configure
./make
<as root> ./make install
rm -Rf crapyoudontneed

Arch has pacman though which is its automated thinger like apt-get or emerge. It's a minimal system, which is good for some people (like me) who only get what they need. Of course it can be more complicated if you don't know what you're doing. Arch is not really for people new to Linux. But that's what's good about Linux is that there is a flavor for everyone from beginner to advanced users.

Back to the question... There is no simple answer. An operating system is always a choice. You will determine which best suits YOUR needs and desires in an OS.
Obviously to play a Valve/Steam game, such as HL2 and its mods, you are going to need Windows or virtualization.

I agree with what someone said about hardware vendors needing to get on the ball with
development and drivers! If you are getting into Linux you need to know the hardware that you have and when buying new hardware check HCLs.

Ubuntu or Fedora will be the best for you if you do not know anything about Linux.
If you have good luck, meaning your hardware is supported, and you really like Linux I would encourage you to use Slackware but don't hate an OS just to hate.

bang on. you pick your hardware and OS depending on the application you're running. you dont buy linux right now (unfortunately) if you're doing audio editing, for example. PCs and Macs hold this ground.

with hardware manufacturers, its a chicken vs egg thing. one argument would be "make the drivers, and more people will take up the OS."

the counter of course is that a lot of work goes in to making a driver, and they need a return.

projects like www.ffado.org are a bloody godsend in breaking this stalemate.

Go go OpenSolaris!

Although that isn't really Linux...

Yes, I triple boot operating systems currently.
