I meant in just general usage... maybe performance-wise, internet browsing... etc, I guess.

I can't really vote one way or the other. Honestly, I've never used Ubuntu...no reason to do so. I've used Slack, Red Hat, FC, Mandrake and CeNTOS over the years and have no fear of any of them. I use CeNTOS presently and have for a few years...good stuff. I don't, however, use it for anything other than server work.

Keep in mind that a good portion of Linux/Mac's security strength is because it's just not as popular and there's not as many published exploits and virii. Just because they don't get hacked as often doesn't mean they can't. And FFS, why not just go with a dual boot and solve all your problems?

i wish more hardware manufacturers would get their heads out of microsoft's ass and write drivers for their hardware. i do admit graphics manufacturers NV and ATI have been quick to pick up, but sound card manufacturers are killing any prospect for a linux based music studio, RME being the one exception.

I'm pretty unbiased, I use Mac, Vista, and a few linux distributions daily. Here's what I ended up with:
Main computer: left 24" is the dvi output of my MBP Main computer: right 24" is the dvi output of my gaming desktop (running vista) Servers/Media center/arcade machine: Some form of Debian, usually Ubuntu. I don't really care for Vista, or Windows in general. It's not particularly easy to use, and pretty hard to customize (compared to linux). I run it on one screen for gaming, that's it. I have Mac on my other screen with Synergy (so one mouse and keyboard for two OSes) which runs Firefox, Adium, OpenOffice, etc. Not only does doing this distribute the load better since the games are separated from the apps, but it keeps all my apps on the same system, as I use my MBP for class as well. OSX also has unix backing, so I can always open up a Terminal and get pseudo-linux functionality. For my servers, they don't really need a UI, so I just auto-login them to blackbox and ssh in with a laptop (the remote to my tv). This keeps it *much* snappier and better performing than Winblows or OSX could dream of being. Anyways, between linux and vista, i'd say if you play mainly older games (including FF), go linux. Fortress runs fine on Ubuntu with Wine, and once you get used to the environment you'll like it a lot more. |

I'm gettin' some slowness in Ubuntu, especially with loading images in webpages, that I can't adequately explain.
Getting my sound to work was a bitch (and still is), moving files around forced me to learn to use the terminal better so I could sudo, and I think the drivers Ubuntu says I need for my video card are either wrong, really outdated, or just not being used properly. I dunno. Some parts of Ubuntu are goddamned handy and some parts make me want to remove hair.

I'm taking a look at SuSE... I might try it out, but I'll probably stick with Ubuntu... if I was able to set up my TV Tuner with it...
