Another BF2 patch, another disaster
After three+ months of client & server crashes, Dice finally released 1.4 last night. Instead of just rolling back to 1.22 when 1.3 displayed severe instability problems, they elected to instead persist with 1.3. Now, bear in mind that a lot of people were paying £100+ per month on ranked BF2 servers that were up and down every couple of rounds. Dice/EA refused to roll back, as that would've rendered their expansion back, Armoured Fury, useless. Hotfix for the crashes as an interim solution? Nah. Too much effort.
Instead, they waited three+ months and released 1.4 which really hasn't fixed much at all. I had a quick game all of ten minutes ago. I managed half a round before I got this entirely NEW crash. Great job, Dice & EA. Fucking useless. I've honestly never witnessed such incompetence regarding technical issues. Their gameplay 'fixes' have been cack-handed too. QA, what's that? If it crashes my PC in an entirely new fashion after a meagre ten minutes of gaming, doesn't that tell you something? Bear in mind this is the team that sold me a game that wouldn't even run out of the box. The team that released their first patch with a memory leak the size of the moon... Having said that, they have constantly surprised me with their fuckups; each seems to build on the terrible base they've set in the past. BF2 could've been the best game ever, instead it's merely a good game that is marred by a zillion issues. Last edited by Defrag; 09-06-2006 at 11:00 AM. |

Half of me thinks they're destroying BF2 so that people move to BF2142. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, as people seem to forgive and forget when it comes to gaming.

I wasn't really aware that it was possible to make a game more unstable and less fun through patching, but hell, Dice & EA have conspired to prove it. |

Does it have bots? Hell, thats all I play with when I feel like a game of Bf1942. Course they suck, but they're better than the tards I usually get a game with.
Speaking of bots, I was digging for some for HL2DM and HL2CTF for a LAN this weekend and it seems Dr. Evil is getting a decent sized fanclub of mod devs waiting for his successful bot for a Source mod that isn't CS:S. Seems no one else is really having any luck making a bot that actually works. |

Why don't you just play on servers with the good patch? Or are there none?

Thats what Merv meant by rolling back to the previous patch. Its probably hard to find any with it.

Sorry Defrag but that's the best thing that could happen to us, the people awaiting FF!
You will play other games, eat and take showers only after FF is released, thank you! |

You know, as much as I complained bitterly about the delays with TFC on the server side....various patches and fixes being delayed Valve pales in comparison to EA. EA is the single biggest reason I never even considered throwing up a BF2 server. Valve's had their share of black eyes in the patch department...not like this though....not like this...

I've never had any problems with the playability of BF2. Mine worked out of the box and each patch has worked (am still on 1.3).
The problem is the gameplay stuff they changed made me not want to play it after like 1.2.

I don't think BF1 ever worked quite right with my sound card, which is a Audigy2. I just think EA sucks at patching their games and releasing them in a working state. It's too bad because the battlefield games are really cool.

I have had a shitload of problems with BF2. Mainly updating. I would install patches and BF2 wouldnt realize it was installed. I had to reinstall the patches several times and reinstall the huge ass game several times in order for it to work. But when I did, I had this huge sound issue where I heard EVERY sound from the map no matter where I was. And so I reinstalled everything again. Lo and behold it worked. But a day later they released a new patch. I'm going to say that I am very frustrated with the patches. And now I have to do ANOTHER one? Bleh. It's a fun game, but not worth the hassle.

I actually stopped playing after 1.3 was released. Until I finally uninstalled it until FH2 comes out. I haven't touched it since. Not to mention it stopped working after the 1.3 patch was installed, which also made bf1942 stop working ... No idea if thats related, but it happened after I installed 1.3.
So in other words. I'm keeping my promise not to buy another EA game until they actually get their shit strait. If anything, BF2 will be the last game I get from them. |
