If you really believe that, you should come to Baltimore, and try to use one between the hours of 6:30am-9:45am, and/or 4:00pm-7:30pm.

Every system has its down side. They say in Japan that when their rail systems get busy, you can't even move around in the train car. Personally, don't want.

They built a light rail here and basically tore down the interstate and put up a new one in a problem corridor. One that is wider and more importantly just better designed. Both the light rail and highway improments helped and Obama didn't do it. The Federal government didn't do it. We did. There was some matching federal revenue for interstate funding since it is INTERstate. So we are in fact, bad ass.

I'm pretty sure that is every public transportation system during rush hour.

Not really. In cars you have your own personal space. In a train car ... not really. Buses prolly aren't that much better. Therefore I'd take a car over the trains if they are busy. But that's just me. Then again, I have no reason to use public transportation anyway, so I really don't give a shit.

What, the highway that goes through or around it? Because every major city that I've ever been through has a route around it.

Because this involves city-to-city transport and even state-to-state transport and not suburb to suburb a-la the subway system in New York, it's kind of a waste of cash.

Edit to clarify: The reason the highway system works is because I'm not forced to go through a city if I don't want to. Because this deals with long distances, and highways already effectively handle the problem with traveling long distances, it's a non-issue.

I've never had a problem with traffic driving across country, and I've done it every year at least once.
