the skybox can be changed to whatever you want.

i understand about the dated feeling, but i should emphasise that the client that it runs on and various other components are still being updated.

ive played pretty much every subsequent release of tf since quake tf, and have had to say ive always been disapointed. none have had the speed or intricacies. but still, i understand your point.

but a classic is a classic. you be the judge.

thats a shame darksoul... could you elaborate a little?

did you run the program from the installed short-cut?

could you get the program to open?

where did you encounter the problem?

id be more than happy to help you through any issues... otherwise, i guess give it a couple of weeks and a stable release should be out.

Here is what I do not understand.

The source code for Quake was licensed under the GPL in 1999. Since that is the case, how come you can not just take Quake and make a standalone version with an installer?

Install the game and it pops everything into the appropriate directories, and then you just load up zelTF.

If you want people to actually play your remake, you might consider making it easier to actually install and run the game.

i could only get quake to load, as opposed to tf. took me a while to find the right readme (the one telling me to actually download tf and rename pak files) which i did, but the pakx file didn't exist.

the startup interface was pretty clustered as well, took me an age to navigate around to rebind keys, vid settings etc.

also the /help command didn't give me any help at all ;(

Unfortunately the original quake cannot be released this way because the media files it contains are still copywrite. The closest thing you will find to this is fQuake, but you will still need to buy the game for the original pak1.pak. Luckily however, the original pak1.pak file is not required for Team Fortress, and thus it can be released completely free.

That is exactly how zelTF works, and in fact making it easier to install and run was the whole point of zelTF. Once installed, you simply click the shortcut, and type "connect server.ip"

With the upcoming stable release, you wont even have to do this, simply choose multiplayer and pick your Team Fortress server. In the current first beta, you will need to find the server yourself. Look on http://www.quakeservers.net/quakeworld/servers/t=tf/ if you don't know where a server might lie.

I should point out tho that team fortress by its very nature is not much of a public server game. Most games played today are pre organised on irc channels around the world, where teams are picked and positions and tactics allocated.

In australia, that channel can be found at irc.enterthegame.com #oztf

The Team Fortress mod loads as soon as you connect to a Team Fortress server. Again, find a server here: http://www.quakeservers.net/quakeworld/servers/t=tf/

Haha! Thats the wrong readme, the right readme is readme.txt in the ZelTF folder. There is also a shortcut to this in the ZelTF shortcut menu. Will remove and extranneous documentation in the stable release.

Oh, I should add it is important that you open ZelTF through the ZelTF shortcut rather than the ezquake-gl.exe in the ZelTF folder.

Sorry guys if anything wasn't clear, I can understand how it would be confusing if you have never played Quake before. Good luck.

Still you could make an installer, just without all of the files that still contain copyrighted stuff. If you dont know how to make a proper installer, just get winzip, free edition even, and zip it all up in its proper directory structure and then rightclick it and select "make a self extracting exe" or something, can even chose the default path (like c:/Program Files/ZelTF/) And then prettymuch problem solved. Could even make the key bindings more along the lines of TFC's defaults and save it to the config before packing it up.

Most people will stop doing something at the first sign of a stumbling block, ever click on a google link have it take more then 7 seconds to load and then hit back cause it was takin too long? ;D

I don't understand what your trying to say. ZelTF is completely self contained, and uses an installer. ZelTF_100.msi is an installer file. Did you actually download this and try it yourself? It installs everything to where it is needed and is instantly ready to play. You don't even need Quake for this to work. Just download, install and play.

Actually I already posted something exactly like this a long while ago (The SMBC Quake Server + Quake Signal thing). It just didn't have custom models. It was absurdly easy to install though.

I have about 300 frames but it still runs slowly. Any idea where that might come from?

It could be a couple of things.

Are you running ZelTF from the shortcut? If not, do that and you should notice a difference.

Are you using a duel core pc? If so, refer to the readme.txt under troubleshooting for information about running ZelTF on a duel / quad core pc.

If neither of these applied to you there are a few settings which you can add to your Settings file.

Beta 1 -> Open ZelTF/fortress/config.cfg in notepad.
Beta 2 -> Shortcut menu -> ZelTF -> Settings

Try playing with the following commands until you get the fluidity you desire.

cl_nolerp 1
cl_physfps 77

If it is still jerky, you might want to try using vsync.

Open ZelTF/fortress/fortress.cfg in notepad. Find the command:

vid_vsync "0.0" and set it to 1, then edit the ZelTF shortcut, and in the target box, edit the command line so that:

+set vid_displayfrequency 75

Rather than 85 as it was before.

Good luck.
