Black Ops
I bought it and I am kinda divided if I want my money back or not lol.
I like the stuff from MW2 like the xp points the new unlocks and stuff. I like the sentry guns, and the ability to revive ur team mates if you are near them, reminds me a bit of tf games : P I like the ability to climb stuff and to slide stuff. The multiplayer is kinda newbie friendly low recoil easy to kill, not like css style. The single player is pretty fun. But The fakin lag is huge, it gets impossible to play it properly single player or offline, my pc isnt great but its decent (Dual core 2.8 / 4 gb ram / Ati 4770), and what suprises me is that it isnt because the graphics are amazing, they aren´t : p but still decent, playng with max settings cept for antializing you look at some textures and they are really low resolution maybe dumbed down for consoles dunno, what might use a lot of resources is the particles /fog / mist / papers and noise stuff that usually eats a lot of fps in source engine so might be that i dont know. But anyway reading coments in webs out there and even on steam foruns a lot of dudes complain about the same lag issues / freezing issues even with hight end pcs--- So i don´t know it have potential but as it is now it kinda sucks, no fun at all to aim to a dude then freeze a bit then ur dead, hope they patch it soon. |

Lag is always an issue with just-released games, especially popular games.
As for Black Ops, I'm split. I heard it's more like COD4, and less arcadeyish than MW2, but still, I think selling repackaged bullshit is pretty low.

Gaming and digital downloads
Digital downloads are booming for several reasons;
You don't need to waste time/gas going to a store that may or may not have the item in stock. You don't have the additional cost of sales tax in many states. Once you install the game under your account, (with the exception of iTunes) you may re-download the product should you buy a new system, have a problem with your system resulting in losing all of your data, or any number of other reasons. You don't have another box and disc taking up space in your home. You have access to any/all software updates. The downsides to the Digital Download; You don't have a "physical product" in hand. You don't have the ability to sell the product to someone else. There is absolutely NO collectors market. For some, these are valid reasons to not use the Digital Download market. In a way, the bottom two reasons are tied to one another. If you can't sell it to someone else, there can be no basis for collecting. Offshoot on that topic, is the rather small but dedicated Atari/Nintendo/Sega/etc vintage gaming market. Certain "collectibles" can be worth hundred of dollars. This is because of the limited number of copies that were produced originally. With the Digital Download market, there are a virtual infinite number of copies available. While this is good for the initial sales(companies benefit), the end user(potential collector) is stuck with a valueless product that they can't sell. This is a perfect example of how disposable our society has become.

Make a game, sell it for a shitload and then push DLC's every month to make bank for another year until sequel number II, III, or XXVI comes out. They've got the pattern down and it seems to be working for them. I'd call it a success.
The real question is: How does it play? |

I don't get how it became so popular in the first place.
I've played single player, it is well made, I was impressed I must admit... but the typical war theme, really? Yawn... it's 2010 and they are still pumping out generic war games. I was sick of them 10 years ago.

I got Black Ops for the PS3 last night and other than the host migration/occasional lag issues, it's a pretty solid game. One thing I don't like and it could be because I just don't know how to get it to work, but they didn't include custom settings for lan games such as unlimited time limit or hardcore mode. I do like the contract system though.
As far as the different styles are concerned between infinity ward and teryarch, I prefer infinity ward's style of graphics more, but I think treyarch hit a home run with this game. I've yet to play campaign, but I've heard it's far from shitty. |

Also: Moosh is exactly correct. Companies like Treyarch and EA are ruining the video gaming industry because they put all this money into developing games in hopes of becoming blockbusters, that it makes games expensive, and then every 13 year old with an Xbox 360 goes out and gets their parents to buy said shitty game. It keeps games expensive, and produces frequent console ports. On top of the already-shitty console ports fucking over PC gamers, developers have opted to stop making mod kits and have completely taken away dedicated servers from players. The video game industry is turning into a machine to pump out games for an audience of gamers that don't cherish their product or the industry, and it all comes at the cost of those who do. I thought the age of Tom Clancy repackaged console ports with no mod-a-bility were over when I discovered PC gaming. That was 10 fucking years ago, now EA and Treyarch are hellbent on bringing it back.

Video game developers only care about the money nowadays. Some developers even refuse to fix bugs in their games because it's 'not their problem'...
