Mumble! (Vent is DEAD)
So I recently have been playing a crapload of League of Legends. (ADD ME: Moogagot)
I've been play with some buddies. Originally we we using a few Vent servers I have gained accessed to over the years. However, we had a few linux users who couldn't get Vent working at all. So we started using a few public Mumble servers. While I wasn't too interested in making a change, I gave it a try. Shortly after I got myself a private server. I have to say that Mumble kicks Vent's ASS. Sound quality is super sharp (Vent sounds like people are yelling over radios). Practicably zero latency (YouTube it... it's scary). It's easy to set up and configure (for the most part) and it's 100% Open Source. Has anyone else tried moving to Mumble? As for Team Speak... I really haven't followed it at all but I consider it very much dead (Although avid VoIP gamers clam it has better latency then Vent, although not as good as Mumble.) Having gone back to Vent a few times, you really can hear the crappy quality that vent has...

I've used many vent servers and probably at least a few codecs. Mumble still kicks Vent out of the water. If you are interested in trying out Mumble with me, let me know and I can PM you my server information.

I use it with some friends when we coop SC2. But I don't use voice com anymore outside of L4D2 ingame. Even so, I like it. Took a bit of getting used to after learning Vent but still good.

I find a large number of LoL players like to use Skype for one reason or another. Man I hate Skype, I've looked everywhere in the app to setup a press to talk button, but I can't find one, so when I use it in game I'm actually physically turning on and off my mic, so people aren't hearing every breath, and sound I make.
Never heard of Mumble though, I can't wait for Riot to just fucking impliment in game voice chat, I find that a large majority of LoL players do have a mic, just never use it cause it's too annoying to get going in Solo games. There's been times though where an AT of 1 - 3 will announce in the champ select that they're playing together and have vent, and give the info, so I'll fire vent up then. I usually play 2-3 games an evening anyone can feel free to add me as well. User: Hammock I'd be happy to test out Mumble with you Mooga |

I like that indicator too, sadly it lags my game.

Mumble is definitely better than vent, even with decent codecs. Vent is basically the same program it was 4-5 years ago, and never made anything of it's popularity. There was a lot of opportunity for ventrilo to become the worlds best and most used voice chat application, but sadly, they never did anything with it. Which is why applications like mumble are popping up and are subsequently better than ventrilo.

Also, you can customize the interface enough so that it's pretty (and Vent-like).
And like Hammock said... I like to be able to use push to talk. Explaining to random people as to why there are random sounds in the background is just annoying. You have no idea how many times people have asked if someone was having monkey sex... |
