[Poll]Map textures, what's your opinion?
I was just wondering what the communities opinions were with the textures currently being used on released map/works in progress. Perhaps with the information on this thread, it will help current mappers or future mappers decide what kind of textures to use on their maps that appeal to the community as a whole. I know different formats of maps (CTF, Attack & Defend,) and different style maps (casbah vs 2fort) call for different texturing from time to time, but generally, which textures usually are appealing to you?
Right now i think there are 4-5 types of styles of texturing: HL2 style texturing FF Style Texturing TFC Style Texturing Classic Style Texturing Aztec Style Texturing |

To be honest, I don't find any of those to be appealing. If anything, I prefer the classic style if only because it's actually slick... but a lack of detail makes them very... eh...
I much prefer the Q3 future-arena style textures and models, but nobody has made anything like that =\.

Of the listed texture styles, I prefer classic (similar style to Warsow (NICE!)), but I also love the Quake 3 arena style.

Also, because classic looks closest to things like this: http://media.netday.be/images/games/...llular0001.jpg Edit: Or hell, just look at Warsow. http://www.warsow.net/?page=media

You forgot blis style lol! (im making impact in a normal gothic theme, no worries)
But yeah there are so many styles possible and good. Monkey theme is best for monkey map, "FF" theme is best for SD2 etc. |

I understand the reasoning behind the "Classic Style" (higher fps and produce map releases quicker), but the complete bland look and the vivid monotonous colors make it a complete eyesore. There has to be some sort of happy medium look with the classic style textures.
FF style textures are so high resolution and extremely detailed it takes away from player model visibility in my honest opinion. They look incredibly nice, but it definitely takes away from gameplay visibility. I really can't wait for gnaa to release hellion with those TFC style textures. From the image shown, the brightness/gama and the textures itself, i'd really like to see what kind of visibility it gets. Because TFC's default textures were the best hands down. <edit> loLz! sorry i neglected to list "the blis style", blister <3 |

I voted TFC style, but it's not like I see walls anyway so I don't care.

... What. the fuck? Of course they look sourcey, we're on the fucking source engine. What else would you expect? Furthermore, I know what warsow is, I have it installed, and classic looks nothing like that. Classic looks like shitty grey with shitty blue and shitty red and overall, an ugly shit fest First picture reminds me exactly of toon tfc. If you want that, go play fucking tf2. As to why I choose tfc style: A) TFC is, arguably, the greatest half life mod, and this mod proves that B) They look damn good with the exception of the striped blue/red on the floor (near exit of top spawn) C) You can already tell, everything can be distinguished very easily, which is a complaint I hear often. D) Team Fortress Classic kicks fucking ass.

A note to anyone that said the "TFC" style looks best (or anyone at all, really):
That isn't, by any means, a TFC-texture style. That is a screenshot of a WIP FF remake of a TFC map from inside Hammer using only FF textures. That is exactly what that SD2 screenshot would look like if it was from the Hammer editor instead of ingame. If anything could be considered a TFC-texture style, it would be phantom_classic, because it is literally using the TFC textures (except not the lighting). As for personal opinion, it seems I have a wide variety of tastes because I basically like each and every style equally. I think lighting is far more important than texturing though.

I can't believe people are actually considering keeping the classic style. I always thought of it as a placeholder until someone makes a real version of the map. One of the reasons I like FF is for the graphical improvement. Yet we want to take a step BACK and make things look like Virtua Fighter 1?

FF ftw.
Honestly just use whatever suits the map. Unless that means you have to use crappy low-res textures that look like they're from doom. I'm looking at the phantom screenshot as I write this. The classic style looks nice if that's what you want, but I think it would be hard on the eyes after a while. I'd like to see some clean textures made that actually use a texture, instead of just a flat color. |

Classic.
I like it because it gives everything a clean, uniform look. Which is why more than half my maps use the "classic" theme now. |

http://www.artificialaiming.net/ssho...r-sshot001.JPG It doesn't look sourcey. Your argument sucks, to be honest. The idea that since it's on source it must, or will look, like most everything else on the engine is crap. The textures typically used on the source engine are ugly as hell. I don't know why people don't make textures that are actually slick. The classic textures aren't good, but neither are any of the other textures available. They are a step in the right direction though. Edit: And what do graphics have to do with anybodies want to play a game? Your logic is absolutely terrible.

TBH, I think a good number of us want something a little more slick and less gritty.
http://forums.fortress-forever.com/s...ad.php?t=18097 And so it was done! I made a quick cel shaded cube and a video for it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGxl9PgCfME Probably isn't processed yet.

Please note the difference between making a classic map in the first place, and keeping them as the "official" version.
