Calling Audiophiles

I'm looking for a decent record player and wondering if anyone has any experience with the Technics SL-1200 range. Is it worth it? And does anybody have other suggestions?

Every time we get records in at Amazon and they say "audiophile quality" I assumed it was a joke I wasn't getting.

Hah. I don't buy into much of the audiophile mentality... of needing a $15,000 record player and five hundred dollar cables. I just want to know if anyone has experience with this product, or knows a good record player for $500 - $1000 CDN.

I'm curious as to why you're seeking a record player for audiophile needs.

Not for audiophile needs, for record playing needs.

Audiophiles being people who are sure to have opinions on record playing equipment.

It all makes sense, except the records-for-audiophiles parts.

Audiophiles is the internet acceptable term for those philing away about audio, and I figured those would be the most likely. In the end, non audiophiles are also fit to comment, especially if you're interested in the genre but reject the label.

I guess I should rephrase the question.

Why are you looking for a record player? If you say to play records I'll ask you why you're using records.

Well I have this large collection of them and the record player I have is dying, so I'm looking to replace it. Why, you ask? Because chicks dig vinyl.

Honestly though... why not?

FT,

I bought an Audio Technica AT-PL120 Professional Direct Drive turntable a while ago to replace the one I lost in the divorce. I really am pleased with it and it's sound. The only downside is that the cables that come with it are "short"... I've had to buy extenders (which yes I know decreases the signal strength), but it sounds fantastic on my Denon. I've got 2k+ vinyl albums, quite a few in the rare category, and I'm loathe to part with them yet. Maybe someday I'll ebay them, but not in the foreseeable future.

Not sure if it's available in Canada or not...

Oh, because there are better sounding, more reliable, less expensive ways to listen to music all the while retaining the 'chick digging' factor by having spinning vinyl.

You can also simulate hisses and pops with relative ease if you're really in to that sort of thing.

Personally I prefer the phonograph for the truest and purest form of record playing. Anything else might as well be digital.

I don't get it... are you making a semantic argument here or am I missing something.

@ SoG: That model you're suggesting would appear to be almost exactly the same as what I'm talking about Clicky

Yours is an upgraded model methinks. It's more expensive fo shizzle, but having a 78 speed would be a delight.

Um, just for listening? any decent direct drive model should do fine. if you wanna be a snob about it, redirect your funds into a good cartridge/stylii (Ortofon Arkiv, etc)

I'm saying that records are really, really, really bad and that looking for a high quality record player is the equivalent of looking for a high quality Ford Pinto. Well, no. That analogy only works in terms of output sound quality.

See, I'm kind of one of those audiophile types. Not the kind that thinks that a $20,000 cable will sound good but the kind that realizes that the quality of the recording and the format that it is in plays a larger role in sound quality than anything else. After that you can just buy cheapo-everything else (as long as it is able to play a good number of formats... like a computer) and then just get some quality speakers.

When a woman comes in and see's you have a pair of these on either side of your bed, and she can hear everything ever, her pants will be on the floor.

If you're hellbent on getting a record player, get one that also plays digital stuffs. When the needle turns to shit or the thing breaks, you'll want to use it for something else.
