GEE WIZZ it takes a long time to connect to servers
Alright, I'm having an issue where it's just taking an effing eternity to connect to servers. My specs are pretty decent for HL2, so I doubt it's that. Any input is appreciated.

no one has been able to figure out the problem
most of us are getting stuck at ''retrieving server info'' screen and thats it and cant connect unless we want want to wait an hour and even then it MIGHT connect if were lucky but its not worth sitting around waiting 30-40min just to play a game. wish devs would post a solution |

Does this happen 100% of the time, regardless of what server you connect to?

This happens to me with every server.
I have an XP2500 Gig of ram 256meg video card 15megabit down 1 megabit up connection And I find most of the time it takes me 3 to 4 minutes (never timed it though) to connect to servers and sometimes it takes longer. But when it feels like its stuck and I haven't moved my mouse for a while I find that moving the mouse around seems to make it start moving quite quickly. Its almost instant. I could leave it there and it won't move from a bar and then I move mouse and it jumps 3 or 4 bars as soon as I touch it. |

4xWD160GB SATA IIs (16Mb Cache) in a Raid5 Array, so it's not exactly slow...Same issue. So far I've been able to join at the end of one game without issues, same server - same map on rotation next and it just hung up at Retrieving info. Tried a few times since with different servers and the same thing. All other Steam apps are fine, games run flawlessly at 1280x1024
Specs: Opteron 2.6Ghz Dual Core 2.5 GB Ram Nvidia 8800 GTS 640mb Audigy 2 ZS 4xSATAII Raid5 Array. 10Mb/768Kb Connection |

Hmm...that is odd. My comp's stats don't even come close to that and I always load in <1 min. Have you tried plugging your system directly into the internet to make sure it's not a weird router issue?

Hey guys, just joined today because I've been having a similar issue.
May be on to something with the HD... I have an 80gig 7200rpm Seagate drive, but it is nearly full and I honestly can't remember my last defrag, so it has probably been way overdue. I cut my loading time from 10+minutes down to about 2 minutes by reducing my resolution to 800*600 from 1024*768, as well as setting all graphic options to Low, or the minimum, under the "Advanced" tab in the video options. Hope this helps. |

The drives are regularly defragged with Diskeeper (about twice a week). XP SP2 and the PC is behind a PIX Firewall (I'm a Cisco nut so I do know how to configure it). I'll try picking a server tonight and clearing all IP traffic explicitly to it, take the reliance on stateful traffic out of the equation. It's extremely unlikely to be the issue though as the ports are opened from the client to the server automatically, plus if the previous connection worked a connection state already exists. It would only be an issue if the server tried to initiate a connection on another port instead of having the client do it.
