I'm all for new highres textures.

Lighting, bump & normal maps have a LARGE impact on the way textures can look ingame. So yeah just an FYI during this "debate"

here's an example where ONLY the normal map for the textures has been changed.

Original 3 textures: http://www.awillden.co.uk/ff/forum/m...s/original.JPG
normal map1:http://www.awillden.co.uk/ff/forum/m...es/normal1.JPG
normal map 2:http://www.awillden.co.uk/ff/forum/m...es/normal2.JPG

P.S. I don't know if I'll ever be happy with my textures but hey - I'm trying.

Yep. Simpler and players won't get lost in the noise.

If you use normal maps that are that strong, you should not have any shadows in the base texture. They conflict if the light comes from the "wrong" angle.

Also when you make normal maps--I use the photoshop plugin--use the right resolution for various details. Stone grain and scratches should use the sharpest settings, and contours(like the form of a stone) should be smooth. You can make multiple normal maps and overlay them to combine effects.

Honestly, while i like the simplicity of Crazybump, using heightmaps and the PS plugin to generate normal maps just gives you so much more control.

(or generate them in a 3d program)
