Anyone up for ff_basketball tourny?

See thread title.

Not today, obviously, but sometime soon? Team sizes can be determined by the number of players we get. Nothing more than 4v, though. Rules can be simple. First team to 500 points wins. That's 25 hoops, I think. I need to edit the lua first to get rid of infection, cut the countdown time, and maybe show who scores.

Dumb idea imo. The spawning time is too quick. You kill someone midmap, they appear around their goal, and by that time they've done enough damage to you previously to finish you off before you have time to score. It's a DM with an idea that doesn't work for this game.

I could see Waterpolo though. 4v4ish. that'd be pretty neat.

I tried to lessen this problem by reducing self-damage to a flat 25, but I could test not giving newly spawned players weapons for a few seconds to prevent them from instantly retaliating. I plan on addressing this problem in a new map by having players spawn on the sidelines.

If you bench players even momentarily, it will make the game clearly one sided to the team who can kill the fastest.

I like it the way it is now where it's not nescessarily the team that can kill the best but it's the team that can stop the opponent's jumps and make their own jumps. Those are two very seperate things, and if you remove players from the "court" even for 5 seconds you'll find it's just going to be the team that's better at killing that'll win the games (might as well just make it a mulch map).

If you're the one making the changes to the lua I would just like to let you know that last night's 3v3 basketball game has been THE spammiest map I've ever played in FF, and I've played some pretty spammy maps. It beat's squeek's unlimited rockets in dm_squeek, it even beats the small room full nade spam of the killbox map, and last night was just a 3v3.

The medic was made completely useless, with solly's having unlimited rpg's, removed his medkit, and his medpacks, you might as well just remove the class if that's the route you're going to take.

The shortened time before the round starts isn't bad, but there still should be a countdown, having no timer removes any "skillfull" pre-round manuever's someone might want to try.

IMO the only change I experienced in last night's game that was "positive" was the shortened ball tossing, and even then that only helps the nubs that can't press use+toss (which allowed you to toss the ball a shorter distance).

Other than that, with the nerfs to the medic, the smaller self damage, the unlimited rockets, the almost instant round starts, pretty much turned the map into the spammiest solly Death Match/Rocket Jump map out there. And this was playing the game as a 3v3 with 5 people who knew what they were doing and 1 noob.

Now that I'm done critiquing the changes, the one suggestion I offer for the map is to either turn off enemy damage completely, or lower it considerabley for players not holding the ball.

As it is right now (and even before those changes from last night), too many people (myself included), spend their time just blowing the crap out of anyone in site, which means the map is a push game, you either push with your team mates from your side to the enemy's basket (reminds me more of football), or you jump from one end to the other, but basketball is one of those game's of positioning where you should be allowed to position yourself without being killed. Sure people can knock you out of position with their rockets or concs, but shouldn't be allowed to kill you so easily and instantly, only the person with the ball should be easily killable. This would most likely reduce the spam and hell even having unlimited rockets wouldnt' be a big deal if they were only able to kill the person with the ball, all the other rockets would be for positioning yourself or repositioning enemies (ie: knocking them away from the ball before they get it).
