compact tablets

ok, so i'm looking for a small tablet pc, with a screen about 10" or so across. i've looked at the dell latitude XT so far, and the reviews on the site all seem quite iffy about battery life and the pen etc.

any experiences with tablets?

I've had one for several years, Wacom is nice Price/quality wise.

Shame they don't make the Graphire 3 anymore, this thing is unbreakable!

The bamboo looks nice, not too pricey even!

I believe Merv's looking for a Tablet PC...not a tablet.

Merv, I wish I had a recommendation but I don't like them. I've worked on a few and I know people that swear by them. The doctors I know who've tried them liked them but they were unreliable.

Worth noting that the Graphire3 IS pretty much unbreakable though. lol.

I got a 4x5 like three years ago. It still works great.

As for Tablet PCs... why do you even want one?

I love the systems the docs near me use(at the clinics and not the actual hospitals), and the systems all the ambulance services around here use. Tablet PC's are perfect for that. However, I don't think it'd translate well into personal use. They ambulances use a Toughbook, which can get expensive, and I don't know what the docs use, so I'm afraid I'm no help.

yeah, it needs to be quite tough, too. i want it so i can use it as a control surface while working as a sound engineer. power isn't an issue, just reliability and durability. it just needs to be able to run gnome smoothly (or maybe win2k)

all the processing will be done elsewhere, so i can get a rack pc sorted for that.

I don't think Gnome would be a problem but, wow, good luck finding W2K drivers for anything currently produced!
