Figuring Progress Level
They say that disclosing and defining the progress and release date of the mod is impossible...and they actually know what's made and not. Well, lets look at some stuff, shall we?
7 Maps are "media" worthy. Not only that but due to other D.J.'s, Id say you got about 3 or 4 near completion. So well say 11 maps are near completion. Now keep in mind this is a loose percentage so I can be off. Now there is 18 maps to be completed for release, plus "Spirit" and my bet is at least one map on that list will not be done. So for now well say 11/18 maps are close are 85 percent complete. 11/18 x .85 x 100 = 52 percent of mapping is done. Now this is rough, and Im sure about 25-30% of each of the other maps have been done, so well add 15 percent on to the total done for good measure. That brings our mapping level to a 70 percent aboutage. Now modeling is a great thing to measure by becuase they can't do a lot of the modeling and animation and sound without programming. So theyre intertwined. Now 4 out of the 9 models (civilian is rather simple...and I'm sure SOMEBODY was drunk enough to rush to do that one on the first day) are basically done. That was a while ago though, and at the rate they were able to release some of the other models, I say two more have been done. That brings us to about 6 player models out of 9. 66% player modeling. 12 weapon models have been brought to media release level. There are an estimated total of 20 or less total weapon models. My guess is 18 but Im probably wrong. Whatever the case, well go with 60% modeling, taking into account some props for maps, although those seem to have been done. So we have 65% average about for media releasing, which is intertwined with coding. This mod got on its feet late 2004 and assuming 65% of the mapping is done, I estimate that the mod will be ready for 1st release come end of this year, probably December or January. So basically, here's my educated guessing: Mod Completion: 65% Estimated Release Date: December 25, 2005 |

now i don't want to derail the thread, but releasing 18 different maps for the initial release would be a very bad idea. 18 maps are way too many to let newbies learn about game types and get a sense of familiarity with the game. i say release the ultra-classic ones (2fort, rock2, well, and a couple of others) + one or two original maps. release one or two maps at each subsequent update.
back on topic, i think your estimation is not far-off. not long ago they said they were about 50% done. 65% done sounds good now, considering all the new dev members and all. half of the team is playing battlefield 2 now anyway so progress has come to an halt but that's ok, let them live . |

That's a lot of assumptions...

i wouldn't say that the modelling and programming are that reliant on each other. i can only think of two cases where the programming team has needed something from the modelling team to proceed (some sg stuff, some player anim stuff), for everything else the 2 teams have been able to work on their things regardless of the progress of the other team

haha.
I'll tell you that I do keep track of progress, and the "proper" way to do it IMO would be to have an accurate time weight for each sub-Task (as that's how much individual man-effort is required). Map production takes a different amount of time depending on the map and who's doing it; same thing goes for models and skins; and for each programming task, for that matter. Unfortunately, we don't know how long something will take until it's been done (so in the meantime, we can just estimate). Plus, one week a dev team member might have 2 hours available to spend on FF and 20 hours the next. So it's not realistic to extrapolate a current percentage complete to predict a release date since it doesn't seem like there's a reasonable "average time a dev team member spends on FF per week." Your assumptions were interesting to me hehe. Some of them are not correct, but some aren't far off.

To me, at least, map progress doesn't seem all that important; if everything else were done, but only 3 or 4 maps were finished, they'd probably release FF anyway. However, if a player model was missing important animations, or a skin, or the sg doesn't behave properly, they would certainly not release FF.
Basically, even with only a few maps, FF would be very playable. |
