Duke Nukem Storyline

You know I got to thinking and I realized that I don't even remember or maybe I never knew what the storyline to Duke Nukem was.

I remember I shot alien things and saved pixelated stripper looking girls but I don't remember at all why I did. Does anybody know if there even was one? On another thought I don't even think I ever completed one.

That's one thing I liked about DN3D, no boring storyline you have to go through while kicking aliens ass.

Maybe I'm just not geeky enough to appreciate games storylines, they really bore me to death. I never play a game for the story going with it, I play a game because the gameplay is fun. If I want a story, I'll watch a movie.

One time I saw a guy recruting people for his mod and all he had was his GREAT storyline. 10 fucking pages of made-up useless informations, seriously...

Lack of story is what is keeping games in general from transcending into art. Also, silent protagonists can kiss my ass.

I have played DN (of course) back in the day at a friends but haven't experienced it by myself and given it a proper good go. There has always been talk of it here and finally it has given me the motivation to do so.

Getting a "high resolution" version of DN3D now.

Heh, I would probably hate it if I played it today. I mean, this game is so old it was played with keyboard only back in the days! Let us know how it felt when you're done!..

Hmm yeah you're probably right. But one thing I'm sure of is that I wasn't aiming up and down with a mouse.

I can't remember offhand if DN3D used a crippled mouse like Doom2 or not...I am thinking that it was somewhat crippled though as I remember mlook being a bit goofy when I tried to play a few years later. I seem to recall getting sound to work being a greater challenge...

On the first point, who cares? They should focus on being entertainment. Games as art is an ultimately unnecessary goal.

On the second point, I mostly agree. I'd rather have a silent protagonist than a poorly-written/voiced one, though.

Well, it still has that uniqueness and comical value about it. Revisiting it, like any game as old as that the game-play/movement feels odd and..basic.

Though, anything other than (TFC/FF/HL) that I can't bhop in feels odd.

If you one of those that like revisiting or playing "classic" games you'll enjoy it. If not you'll think it's shit (usually ones that can't appreciate good things).

High Res Pack is nice.

Edit: I couldn't remember if it had mouse support or not but it does.

D3d features a 'normal' mouse with x and y movements. It's not exactly smooth, but it works.

Also, I hate the high resolution pack, it kills the nostalgia of the game.

As for stories in games, I like a good story, but it's rarely what keeps me playing. Still, the story in, say, Thief: The dark project, deuse ex and the half-life series add a great deal to the game.

The guy who showed me how to make HL maps back in the day just recently made a Duke3D map just for the nostalgia. Weird.

I figure that is the best storyline explanation for Duke ever haha. Glad it wasn't just me. I knew I had fun playing the game but couldn't remember what the motivation to play was other than it was fun. I might have to go back and play some more later.

Wasn't that build.exe? Where you had to use the arrow keys and space bar to draw lines?

It may take some work. I was googling the sound issue and it would appear that there may be some workarounds for it but I haven't had time to try them. Sound does appear to be the major issue for Windows and newer hardware.
