Video slowdown

So I just reformatted.

I play a low power game like Diablo II, things go fine.

If I run a video full screen - like a YouTube video, things slow down like Hell. I also get a lot of popping sounds, like a speaker that's turned up so high that there's distortion.

If I run a fullscreen MKV or AVI file, though, the popping and slowdown is not nearly as bad as with a fullscreen video streamed from the web.

I haven't even tried a full screen game like FF or HL2 yet, although I'm about to.

The video drivers are the same video drivers I've used before - they're the latest I have for my car.

The only thing I've noticed different is my sound settings. Previously, my Sound Device was listed as HD Audio Render. Now it's listed as SoundMAX HD Audio 0.

My motherboard is an ASUS P5NSLI or P5ND2, I forget which. I'm running a gig of RAM.

Any ideas as to what it could be?

Also, in the unlikely even that it's leftover driver junk, what's that program that cleans up driver stuff?

Is your audio, in fact, HD Audio? Are you running XP? If so did you install the kb888111 HD Audio patch which is NOT included in any XP SP and is typically a fee based download... (PM me if you need it). BTW, I don't think you can install the patch if SP3 is installed...

Any warnings in the device manager about drivers?

Hell if I know, but it said "HD Audio Render" before and Soundmax HD Audio 1 or something like that now. Worked fine before.

No, but I didn't need it before. Nothing with my system has changed save for reinstalling Windows XP.

So yeah, this problem just cropped up on my roommate's computer today. Same symptoms, but only when he runs DVDs and not video.

We ran uh... Raxco's Trial Defragmenter because his C: drive (5 gig partition of a 40 gig) wouldn't defragment. We made use of the aggressive mode because regular defragmentation just would not complete. I thought it might have been a free space issue, but he had 17% free - 2% more than required.

Sooo... any ideas on this people? And my original problem still hasn't been solved insomuch. Regular video runs fine, but if I try to run higher res stuff (Like 1280 x 740 or whatever the res is), it runs like crap. Yes, I went through most of the options provided here already. ):

2 gigs of RAM, he's got one.

The issue is that things ran FINE for both of us.

I reinstalled Windows and all of a sudden things weren't fine.

He defragged his HD, and all of a sudden things weren't fine. Honestly, the FUCK? ):

The codecs I use are the same ones I always have, CCCP.

SoundMax is usually for onboard sound chips, if you have a sound card, you do not want this turned on. In your Bios look for the onboard audio, and disable it.

now go and make sure you have the speakers pluged in the soundcard, and not in the ports for the onboard audio. THen go and install the latest drivers for your soundcard.

Should have mentioned this, but I don't have a soundcard. I'm using onboard sound.

Hrmmm... Ummmm..

Ok , Cool ,

Well, it being on board audio opens a different can of worms all together.
Take a look at your device manager, make sure there are no yellow triangle signs with the "!" in them. If you see one, find the device, and download/install the drivers.

the ones you really need to look at are your chipset drivers, they are also known sometimes as your BUS drivers, These drivers will sometimes control things like Ethernet chips, floppy drives, IDE and SATA hard drives, CD/DVD roms, and onboard sound and video chips. They are always different depending on your manufacturer. Sometimes you will need separate drivers.

If your PC came with a "restore" disk, take a look at it, they sometimes pack drivers on them.

If you have a dell , be sure to get the drivers from DELL. They will tell you you have a name brand device when you buy the computer. and later you will find out that it is just a big fucking lie, they get special cards made just for them, so that the drivers from the name brand device manufacturers will either not install, or they will not work properly.

My system is supposed to have a i680 Nvidia mother board, yet when i install the Nforce drivers My water cooling unit stops working, My onboard LAN will not function, and my video cards will not go into SLI mode. Only the outdated DELL drivers will work. And according to dell, they will not be updating the drivers, unless there is an incentive for them to do so. They no longer make PC's with my motherboard, so they are not going to update the drivers unless the old ones cause a failure.

well, anyway... check out the chipset drivers, they might fix your problem

Everything's installed from the mobo disk. It's the same stuff I installed when I got the motherboard a year and a half ago.

Is the performance issue the same whether you're using IE, FF or Chrome? Ultimately it sounds like an issue with the drivers for the sound card. As a test you might try using a compatibility mode (like AC97) if the onboard sound offers that option in the BIOS. If it works better then you may have an issue with the drivers for which updates should be sought.
