What map-types are people most interested in playing on pub servers?

Just curious. I'm trying to get a decent mapcycle as well as map list without having too many maps on my server that cause people to leave.

So, if you specify the map type that you would like to see the most on a pub server, also feel free to explain what maps you think would help/hinder a server.

I like the voting system on OT, apart from how it butts into gameplay meaning you cannot switch weapons until you have voted... but it lets people choose what map-type people want to play next. Then a list of randomly generated maps of that map-type alongside any nominated maps.

I'd like that system more if say 2 of the maps were from a short list of the best maps of that map-type. Generally speaking, people do not bother nominating maps before a vote, thankfully the initial map-type vote on OT gives people a window to nominate before the proper vote, almost like a reminder, which I often use to nominate a map that 90% of the time is chosen as the next map because I know it keeps players. But usually other people don't nominate, and nothing kills a server faster than a bad list of maps for a vote. So people all vote for different unpopular maps and as a result an unpopular map is chosen, and people sharply disconnect and either stop playing or go to a different server.

People complain the same maps are played over and over, which is sort of true, but they keep players and are popular for a reason, and that's how a server lives. I have seen people gain support for a different map though and when it comes to the vote that map gets chosen, so if people want an abstract or lesser played map to be played next, they just need to gain support in the server, that's often how Turkeyburgers gets played or Rock2, when people voice themselves.

Also, (I know you're not guilty of this) but if during a map a couple of people want a map change, don't suddenly change the map to what they desire, it cuts gameplay for everyone else in the server and I consider it a type of admin abuse when I've seen people do it, pisses me off, even if it's only 5 minutes from the end of the map, it doesn't bring the map to a conclusion. If multiple people want a map change, just tell them to nominate their maps and rock the vote. If enough people want the map to change, it will happen, so the majority have spoken on the matter. I think all map-based decisions should be made by the majority through a democratic vote.

I have high hopes for your server KubeDawg, from what I've seen you're a good guy and a good admin, and your server for me has smooth gameplay and has brought many old faces back to the game.

Keep it up.

I don't think murderball should be categorized with volley/basket and I don't think mulch_dm should be categorized with turkeyburgers. They have the same parent category I guess but they differ too much.

Also, is warpath and cz2 the same game type? They are both control point but you cap them in a different manor.

I only had 10 poll options to work with striker. :P

Also, thanks Freak, I appreciate it.

Something I suggested to striker was a map rating system where at the end of a map when a mapvote is usually initiated, before the mapvote comes up, another vote would pop up asking what they thought of THE CURRENT map on a scale from 1-5, 5 being great, 1 being horrible. The pop up would only appear once to the user, and each rating would be averaged and associated with each specific map.

Then, you could go one further and make it so if you were on a map that had a low rating (let's use a rating of 1 for example), only maps that have a rating of 3 or more would be shown on the map vote sans the maps that have been nominated.

That way, if you are already on a not-so-popular map, it would be nearly impossible for the map to change to something that people really don't want to play, something that would normally drive the 40% of the users that DIDN'T succeed in voting for what they wanted, out of the server.

In regards to some people wanting a different map, they have the power to change it with RTV. I rarely change the map myself unless there are few people in the server and I know they wouldn't get pissed.

Skill maps have their own dedicated servers :P, to add them within normal maps on a serious server would be silly. People go to a skill server to play skill maps only. Which happens now and again. I think they would completely kill a server or take it out of business for the duration of a skill map if they were added, only a small amount of people enjoy skill maps.

It would be like a Counter Strike: Source server having normal maps in a vote but also surf maps and zombie mod maps. People go to dedicated surf and zombie mod servers to play them. They need to be with their own kind since they aren't serious gameplay, like a skill map.

Ah, but he stated in his initial post that the reason for this poll was to help the map-cycle/map list on his current server, which is a normal gameplay server. Unless he is thinking of opening a second server for skill maps, then they aren't needed

I didn't read his post, read the TITLE of the THREAD. But in any case,a skill map wouldn't make me leave. So either way, I R WINN4R.

Also this is in the wrong forums. Should be in Communities, Leagues, Clans and Guilds.

Done.

Honestly, I like specific maps, not specific types. I'm open to trying new maps... so I'll at least run around one I don't know just to see if I like the layout. If I do, I'll play it. If not, I'll stick it out until the map changes, if I'm looking to play for a while. The only thing that will make me stop playing "early", is if 2 maps I don't like come up in a row.

I must have seen this at least a dozen times in 2.42 - 2.43, though I've never really paid attention to which server. The worst is when there's a RTV, a map gets picked and it changes, then 1-2 people say "no do X map", then it's changed by the admin to that, then half or more of the server leaves.

I didn’t read your whole post. But I'll say that the voting system on OT only favors CTF. I've never seen an AvD map been played on OT except for Napoli, which is strangely under the CTF tab on OT. So yea please don’t implement it or we will never see good maps like ksour ,dbowl etc on your server

It's mainly the OT community who all vote for CTF, on Talos and other servers people nominate AvD maps and play them successfully with plenty of people, sometimes it just takes a couple of people to rally the server into voting for AvD or Warpath, and generally they get chosen. Quite a few of the "OT community", ONLY play OT. Others who play all servers are open to AvD and other gametypes.

So in no way should the people who play OT be considered with other servers, I can imagine with a similar voting system AvD will be chosen fairly often, most of the non-OT people who are usually banned from OT... are avid AvD fans. And those are the guys who play Talos, KubeDawgs and other servers.

EDIT: Look at the poll results, most votes are going towards AvD... which proves my point, in a normal server, as in non-OT, it will be a popular gametype. Even IvD is outvoting CTF.

Isn't AvD pretty much just a longer IvD and should be counted together?
