Wants to get a new vidcard
So yeah.
The testerz (throw up the Fs!) know about my shameful secret. I am running a RADEON 9250. That is PCI. Not PCIe, PCI. I have to run FF on low... everything. For the first time yesterday, my graphics card failed me. I have all of the system requirements to play Battlefield 2 except for one... the video card. My search for employment is picking up this week, so I have been thinking about something to splurge on after I have some money in my bank account. (No, I am not going to spend ALL of my money RIGHT AWAY on this... do you really think Ihmhi is that silly?) My mobo and power supply can support SLI, although I think that would be overkill. I want a good card that I will not have to swap out for a couple of years. PCIe is a must, obviously. I would also like to be able to plug in something like, say, my PS2 and capture video directly from the console. And so on. And so forth. Edit: DX10 support is a must. Suggest away. If anyone suggests Dual 8800s, I will come to your house and bludgeon you with a heatsink.

Although Nvidia appears to be dominating the video card market, I would have to suggest you wait to purchase a new video card, wait. Even though reviews on DX10 are on the fence, I have to recommend you wait until DX10 is further supported and video card prices drop.
But if you do not want to wait, I would have to suggest a Radeon X1900XTX video card, it is retailing for roughly 350 - 400, cannot support DX10, but it is a tank. One of the best cards I have owned. |

It is probably gonna be at least two months before I can afford to get it, maybe three...
I should add, DX10 support is a must IMO. Someone will eventually hack it to work with XP, so yeah.

A radeon X1950 Pro is about $200-$250ish... and is a rather nice card.
And really... wait on DX10. Prices are going to drop so fast, it'll be like FF was released or something.

Yeah and like I said 10 will eventually be cracked and available on Windows XP, one way or the other.
Some game hacks will downgrade their DX to 9, and some will rely on a hacked version of 10 running via Windows XP. I want to be able to play 'em when that time comes around.

I'm in the same boat as you Ihmhi. I won't be buying my new video card (and the rest of my build for that matter) until FF is announced and very close to release.
Right now I'm looking at the "superclocked version" of the 320MB NVIDIA 8800 GTS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130038 It only costs a few bucks more than the standard version, and a very similar card (same specs different brand) actually beat out the much more expensive 640MB version in almost every game. edit: here is the benchmark article http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/articl...50aHVzaWFzdA== |

There was this dude called bl4h who would NOT shut up about his "dual 8800gtx donkey funkers" or whatever. He even had "dual 8800s" under his name on the forums, and threw it in there nearly every chance he could. "How will the Pyro be balanced against the HW while my GLORIOUS DUAL 8800S are rendering it on my HD widescreen monitor while I drink beer and get a handjob from my girlfriend?" Or something along those lines...

Imhi, get like an X1950 GT or Pro to wait while DX10 cards actually become worthwhile. They're around $150, the latter being slightly better. 8600/2600 series are not that great in either DX9 or 10 so unless you plan on getting an 8800 I'd say wait. |

DO NOT buy two cards to run in SLI/Crossfire unless you already own one of them. Its a pretty accepted argument that for the cost of two cards, you could buy one that runs faster. Its also worth mentioning that Vista has problems with SLI... I think. And if you're not going to be running Vista, DX10 shouldn't be a requirement in the card.
If you're not going to buy a card for another couple of months, there's no use in wasting time looking right now. Nvidia is supposedly going to release a card running their G92 gpu in November (I think) which should initially fall into the "mid-range" for video cards... around $200-$300. Initial reports are that its already faster than the 8800 series. I'm not sure if the cards will be released as the 8900 series... or 9800 series... hell, people have been throwing #'s out left and right. I also want to point out that AMD is supposedly releasing a "Pro" version of the HD 2900 which will cover the "mid-range" cards as well. I'm thinking the Pro version will probably be much less power-hungry and hopefully more efficient/cooler. I believe AMD is also hard at work getting their R700 line ready... I have no idea when they'll be shipped though. If you're looking at the 8800 series, you can probably expect a price drop around October/Novemeber... that's just a wild ass guess though. The 8800's will be a year old by then, it'll be the holiday season, and hopefully they'll have a new line out. You might be able to grab a 8800GTS for fairly cheap by then. |

Okay, here is my issue with DX10.
At some point, DX10 will probably implement something that DX9 would not be able to do. Therefore I would need hardware support for DX10. What I figure is that the hardware support is easy, but the software support would have to be Vista unless someone makes a patch that will let you run DX10 (or the game) on Windows with all of the features (and considering the popularity of XP, it is somewhat likely). Of course, it is more likely that there will just be DX9 downgrader patches for games and such. So... is it really not worth it to get DX10, even considering that I want this card to be able to play most stuff pretty well for at least 2-3 years?
