Sharing Video Over Network

Being lazy I'll ask here.

I tried playing video on my laptop shared from my PC wirelessly. But it was choppy. Is that to be expected? I did try cabled but it was the same.

I tried just sharing the folder with the video(s).

What should I be doing?

try a media server, rather than windows file sharing. and don't rely on wireless for reliable links.

If those don't work you can try VLC?

have you got a PS3, or has your TV got DLNA? install a DLNA server.

Nope. I don't have any consoles or fancy TV gear. Because I don't even watch it. I watch all my stuff on my PC monitor. 22' "full HD". Good enough for me. So I'm behind the times with media sharing.

I'll give VLC a go later. Though, I take it video can't be shared well over the router then?

TV that has DLNA? Needs must google, it would be pimp if I could share media directly to my TV without needing to route through my PS3. I haven't had any luck getting videos to play that way.

Meh, I just need to learn how to use the PS3 properly then. I wonder if I could stream videos through TVersity that are on the interwebs?

i have a sony bravia that does it. PS3 does the job far better though.

I just have my media center computer hooked up directly to my TV. Originally I used MythTV on it, but then switched to Boxee. Then like 2 months ago the video blew up. I narrowed it down to an esoteric hardware problem. So I removed the TV capture card because I don't actually *watch* cable... It's stable for now. Hopefully it will continue to not explode.

DLNA/UPnP is probably the best way to share media over the network for watching it. There's XBMC and MediaTomb. There's also a really lightweight console based UPnP server, but I can't remember it. Make sure the client device can read whatever you're sending it. For example, the Xbox 360 will not play MKV files.
