FAT32 to NTFS
Soooo, today I finally finished downloading dark messiah.
But the fucking HD won't let me create the iso, wich is 7gb.. (Yes, my hd is fat32). So, has anyone done the conversion already? If I do it will I lose any files and such? I'm just asking because I really want to play dark messiah ): |

Hmm, I dont have any experience with acually converting your main Windows drive from Fat32 to NTFS, I know the process is possible, but I hear there is risk involved with it. Really, you'd be best to reformat. If your running Fat32 on a OS that supports NTFS, then that more then likely means you did a Upgrade install, and Upgrading to an OS like XP from 98/ME is just never close to as good.

Pretty sure the easiest way to upgrade is through a reformat, and at that time, when you are setting up the hard drive partitians you would simply set it to NTFS.

I converted a drive a few months ago with absolutely no problems.
Just make sure you read this Microsoft suport document before you begin. |

I love how most of DF's posts are like news stories with links in them.
"You know it just sucks when a night out on the town ends in beastiality bukkake on a Virginia Farm." Okay, be honest, how many of you tried to click that thinking it was a link? d:

So, I did the conversion, went smoothly..
I'm playing the game ritght now. Kinda off topic: If you play the game for an hour or so, when you leave you still see the screen doing the movement you do when you walk..That's creepy. (At least I do.) |

The link to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881 is a pretty good description. But typical microcrash gives the complete path - click start - all programs - command prompt. Screw that, just click start - run, type in cmd and hit the enter key. At the command prompt type in convert /? for a list of commands and you will get - Converts FAT volumes to NTFS. CONVERT volume /FS:NTFS [/V] volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon), mount point, or volume name. /FS:NTFS Specifies that the volume to be converted to NTFS. /V Specifies that Convert should be run in verbose mode. So the command will be something like convert c: /fs:ntfs Replace c: with what ever drive letter you want. You will have to restart your system and the conversion will happen while windows loads. Why do you have to burn an ISO? Just download the game via steam and it will be ready to play. Be warned - when doing a reinstall of the OS, sometimes the windows installer can not see a NTFS partition. Sometimes, not always, when you have to reinstall windows, the windows installer will have to FDISK the drive- meaning you lose everything, unless of course its backed up on a separate disk. XP is pretty good at handling installs on NTFS drives, windows 2000 is not. So, are you running win2k, or XP? If running running win2k I do not suggesting converting your bootable drive to NTFS - this makes it sssooo much easier to reinstall later on. I do recommend a separate drive from your bootable partition being NTFS so it can handle larger files, like the one your trying to create an ISO off of. I am a network admin for a local hospital. The network is mixed win2k and XP pro - I have been using win2k since it came out and XP since it came out. I have reinstalled literally hundreds of computers by hand - meaning I did not use a ghosted image. Last edited by ~kev~; 07-06-2007 at 09:07 PM. |

What is that supposed to mean? The title of the thread is FAT32 to NTFS. I read through the thread, did not see a detailed answer. Plus I saw some bad advice posted. Skull did the conversion just fine. The next person that has this question - this thread may not help so much, BECAUSE there was bad advice posted. Its ok for bad advice to be posted, its ok for someone to hijack the thread - and you pixel even replied to the hijacking. But its NOT ok for me to post a reply to the question of the thread.
