For aesthetics check out some goals by Maradona (against England 1986 whoa), Ronaldinho, Zidane (Champions League final at Hampden springs to mind). If you showed me the 'best' play at American Football or Basketball and then I showed you one the great goals in soccer of the past then theres only gonig to be one winner.

Finally the fact that there are less goals/points/scores whatever just means more meaning/value is put on each individual goal. The classic example is Michael Thompson for Arsenal against Liverpool 89 I think when they won the Premiership, at Anfield, in the last minute of the alst game of the season with 1 goal. Unbelievable.

You obviously like football alot. Others obviously don't. This discussion is as pointless as trying to discuss politics where both sides disagree. One side will never get the other to change their views and it just boils down to a 10 page pissing contest of people going back and forth just reiterating their points in different ways.

JactusCack - of course theres been some great moments, but what makes them seem greater is that they are so few and far between. having 90% of the play be crap with a occasional bright moment a good thing?

perhaps you can point me in the direction of which leagues this happens. most of the matches i see are mostly spent in the midfield area and it makes me want to hurt babies.

Anyway on topic, puppy are you advocating 100% 'exciting' (read: boring pointless drivel) play?

90% of the play is tactical, subtle and (to me) exciting. But mind you, you would say that about American Football or whatever :P

I'm not backing down from the great football moments being > than all though

Yeah, strategy, sure. I'm not getting into this point because I don't know much about American football. Actually I don't find it a bad sport, or anything like that. Personally every sport is atractive to me, some more, some less. But really, it pisses me off when someone go like OMG SOCCER SUCKS.

Show me some like the best football plays ever. I'll show you the best soccer plays ever. You just can't say that football ones are better (in the matters of beauty and being impressive, or whatever).

Also I find funny how many of you are saying soccer is a bad sport because you don't need a great physical conditions? For christ sakes, get some brains.

Sure you can. Search for a Barry Sanders highlight reel on youtube. Anyways, that's not the point, individual play judging is subjective. no ones right or wrong.

but its not about individual plays...its about the game as a whole. i never mentioned that soccer players werent great athletes...course they are. i just think the sport is kinda lame and that its so popular worldwide out of nationalism. again, my opinion.

but i don't think it can be argued that american football is a deeper and more complex game, with the coach and schemes being so important to the end result.

You could say that about every sport, there's got to be something more that makes football by far in a way the most popular game in the world. Any sport can be nationalistic, I think that's more a biproduct of it's success than the cause of it.

Could also have something with soccer getting the short end of the television stick and all... there are tons of people stateside who love soccer, especially immigrants from Central/South American countries.

I mean, if you moved to Argentina for the rest of your life, you would root for their soccer team... there is potential for a fanbase here and it just goes to shit.
