I wouldn't make the jump for DX10 just yet. Very few games actually utilize it. It's like putting a 0-250 MPH speedometer on a moped that only goes up to 35.
I think the Radeon X1950XT is around the same range and offers great performance, as well as the nVidia equivalent (7950?).

i'd just get a cheap card that will hold you over, i'm going to get a descent one to hold me over until the DX10.1(10.01, whatever) cards come out.
i need the video card and a processor and the comp i'm building is finished.

It would really help if you gave us which OS (Vista or XP or ?), how much ram, CPU, and motherboard make/model.

Hi. I built a new rig for myself last month using Intel Q600 quad core/8800 GTS 640MB.
The 8800GTS is an amazing card. |

From what I've heard, the 8800 GTS is an amazing card so if your going to buy one, do that one.
I do agree with silver though, DX10.1 is coming out too, so if you can bear with your current setup, I'd wait it out. |

To be honest with either of the cards you specced there a P4 3.0Ghz processor is going to bottleneck your system if its a single core.
What monitor and resolution do you game with? Also how beefy is your power supply as the ATi cards do need a lot of juice. The 2900 pro is a very nice card but will only be available in limited numbers. The Gts is a stonking card and would perform better out of the box than the 2900. Difficult one to choose really especially with Nvidia releasing a new card in november and the details placing it around the Gts performance mark for less money.... If you go for an older dx9 card then definitely go for an ATi 1900xt or 1950pro over Nvidia 79xx |

if your not looking to run a HD monitor, id suggest not getting the HD2900, as it has similar bench's compared to the x1900xt series

If your gaming on a 19" LCD then i would go for the 2900pro. If you are familier with overclockers then you should be fine to OC the card to 2900xt speeds
Why not post on their forums i have always found them to be very helpful when asking about hardware choices! |

If I may ask, what's "Overclockers"?
What motherboard are you running? And a P4 3.0 WILL bottleneck just about any card above a GeForce Ti4200/Radeon 9x. It's not slow per say, but isn't powerful enough for the cards you want. You'd best upgrade your CPU (and if it uses a different socket, your motherboard too), and then your card.

It will blow your 9800pro out of the water! 3-4 times as quick if not more.
Bottlenecking means that one component in your system is comparitavely slower than the rest. Your top of the range graphics card while it will eat graphics for breakfast your processor might not be fast enough to keep up. So your card will just sit there waiting for the processor to give it something to do. Not a huge problem as it will still be miles quicker than your old card. Plus side is when you order a new processor and motherboard you will see another performance gain Just a word of worning though your old ram is probably DDR and therefore not likely to work in your new motherboard unless you get a backwards compatible one. |
